The Daily Grind: Which MMO is the best at respecting your time?

A few weeks ago, in response to our Daily Grind about how many MMOs we’ve all logged into this summer, one reader replied with a specific game, saying, “It’s the only game that respects my time.” I don’t want to discuss the game but rather that concept because that’s important to me too!

I “grew up” in MMORPGs that most definitely didn’t respect my time. I don’t even think the early MMOs did it maliciously; they just weren’t questioning too hard when they were asking us to spend hours doing basic things like traveling or regenerating mana. I don’t think studios made a conscious decision to stretch out our time-played until later. And for me, it’s not really about how long a thing takes but whether the experience is actually worth that length time (and often whether I can spread it out over multiple sessions). If it’s going to take four hours, OK, but I want those hours to feel worthwhile and not feel like I’m just, well, marking time.

Which MMO is the best at respecting your time?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
