The Daily Grind: So, are you playing New World on launch today?

I’d tell you not to plan on playing New World today, but… you’re MMORPG players. You already know this advice, and you’re probably also planning to ignore it!

I’m pretty excited for the launch: We’ve had a ton of MMO launches this year, but it’s not every day – or even every year – that we get a real AAA MMORPG with the potential to be a huge hit and break into the top five titles for our genre. So I’m excited for it from that meta level as well as to actually get to play. But of course, I’m working all day, so I’ll be watching from the sidelines as the US servers start their engines (and catching up on the EU rollout first thing when we get up!).

How about you? Are you playing New World? Are you planning to jump in today, or are you waiting a bit? Did you take off work to be there for go time? Or are you sitting the whole thing out to see how it goes and whether the game has staying power?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Nah. I mean… I got turned off to it long ago and while there might be a reason to look at the game again, I’d rather others look while I move my raft down stream.

I’d like to! There’s a lot to love about playing a brand new, shiny MMO. My finances aren’t healthy enough to splurge on games atm, but I’ll keep an eye on it over the next year and see how it develops.

Kind of. I played the battle for names! What I did: I made a list of names I wanted before servers opened up, and had the client open 10 minutes before EU scheduled launch. It went up a few minutes before time, and I was in there immediately. I got 2 of my top 3 names (no clue how quickfingers got in before me but gg to that person!) and went to bed. I have checked server status throughout the day but figure I won’t log in to really play for a day or more. I’m letting it calm down. It’ll be there for me later. :) I am most looking forward to fishing!

Trying to but the queue aggro has me.

I love the game, want back in!

Nope

I tried the alpha a couple of years ago, hated it. Tried the open beta a few weeks ago, and whilst I can see that the game has improved a lot, it is definitely still not for me. I just can’t get passed the shallow combat and I could never connect with the IP.

Still, I wish the game well. First AAA MMO from a western studio since 2014, I want it to succeed if for no other reason than I don’t want it’s failure to scare off other big developers.

No. I make an effort not to buy Amazon stuff.

That being said, I hope the game does well and the players have fun.

I’d like to but won’t have time for it before Friday, unfortunately.

But hey, there is MassivelyOP with its coverage letting me join in on the hype! <3

Are you kidding? With the addition of Gundabad pre-sale load screens to Lotro? I’ll be looking at those bad boys and dreaming of redoing all my legendaries all day!

Yup. Rolled out of bed at 7:58, fired up the flivver, made my character. Tried to name her Goodie Two Shoes, but that name was taken, which made me laugh; successfully gave her one of my made up names nobody uses. Got into a 1780 queue on Celadon.

Got a shower, exercised. Got into the game around 9:15 ish. Immediately saw that the dark blue hair color I gave my avatar looked dull and black. Nope. Deleted.

Recast my avatar and went back into queue. Bright teal hair, thank you very much. Had breakfast. Read that deleting a character can cause problems. Logged off, shut down Steam, restarted to clear Steam’s throat and got back into queue around 10:20 am. Queue of 1700. It’s now about 35 minutes later and I’m down to 912. Should get into the game in another 20 minutes or so based on my tracking.

Seems like normal first day of MMO events. Despite the moaning and pissing about queues, the servers are working, which is actually pretty rare for a massive MMO launch.

Why, yes, I know that playing on launch day is not what knowledgeable, veteran MMO players like myself do, but here I am.

“Clear Steam’s throat” is cracking me up – I’ll be adding that phrase to my lexicon. Thank you very much. :P

Hard pass.
