The Daily Grind: How long do you spend to ‘finding the fun’ in an MMO?

You got boring real fast.

Reviewing games is an interesting prospect because it changes the way you approach video games in general. You’re not just playing for your own enjoyment; you’re playing in the hopes of understanding why someone would find this fun, even if that someone isn’t you. That means digging down and finding the fun, finding out what would be appealing about the title, even if it doesn’t happen to appeal to you personally.

Of course, when you’re playing on your own time, you don’t have that same problem. You don’t have to keep playing an MMO that isn’t engaging you… but a lot of people persist, doing their best to find the fun in the title, to unlock the moment when the game’s systems click and the whole thing starts being fun to play. Some people will keep trying to find the fun for weeks on end, while other players will peace out after just a couple hours.

So what about you? How long do you try to “find the fun” in an MMO? Do you give a new game a week to grab you, or a month, or a certain level? Or do you clock out pretty quickly, depending on how much the game cost you in the first place?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
