The Daily Grind: Do any MMO class themes turn you away from playing them?

Last weekend, FFXIV announced that one of its upcoming jobs (classes) will be a Pictomancer — a mage that flings paint all willy-nilly. As someone who is beyond tired of boring mage tropes, I love the creativity behind this. Yet I also know that the Pictomancer’s very theme will repel some people owing to its flashy weirdness.

I’m willing to bet that this is fairly common across the community. Classes hold to different themes and therefore appeal to different kinds of players, and so it stands to reason that there are classes that might be dealbreakers for some based on the theme alone. Maybe a thief is repellant because you hate the idea of stealing, for instance, or you would never touch a necromancer because they never wash their hands after handling corpses.

Do any MMO classes ever turn you away based on their themes alone? If so, what were they? Did you ever come around to trying it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
