WoW Classic hosts a ‘welcome back weekend’ with free play through May 13 for Cataclysm’s pre-patch

These days, it feels as if World of Warcraft is trying to make you choose whether you want to live with WoW Classic or Retail — or have bedrooms in both houses. This weekend, however, the former gets custody of you former players as WoW Classic hosts a welcome back weekend of free play.

From now through Monday, anyone with a lapsed World of Warcraft account can log into Classic (not retail) and check out the Cataclysm pre-patch with Goblins, Worgens, and transmog. It is mildly interesting to note that even Blizzard is calling these servers “progression realms” these days. The free weekend ends Monday at 1:00 p.m. eastern.

Of course, this promotion is an effort to boost numbers for Cataclysm Classic’s rollout on May 20th. The studio also is selling level 80 boosts, pets, and a flying mount for characters.
