The Daily Grind: What part of MMO design seems much easier to MMO players than it really is?

A while back, I saw someone make an offhand comment about how to save New World. According to this commenter (no names, not dunking), all the devs would have to do is repaint the UI and relaunch fresh servers and call it New World 2. “Easy,” he concluded.

Now, it’s a rule of thumb that any time someone declares some complicated plan “easy,” it’s bound to be anything but. And in this case, yeah, I’m pretty sure that a New World rescue – if you even agree it needs one – would be a little more complicated than that. I’ve seen so many MMO players declare the equivalent of this over the years. Just rebalance 20 years of loot tables! Just add housing! Just throw together a classic server from a decade ago!

What part of MMO design seems much easier to you – or to other MMO players – than it really is?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
