Old School RuneScape will sunset its Java client next year and revive Leagues V next week

If you can remember all the way back to 2020, then good for you. Would you care to tell me what sort of diet you’re on that helps with that? Also, do you happen to recall when Old School RuneScape began working on replacing its old Java client as part of plans to deprecate it? Well if you didn’t, consider this a reminder from Jagex, which has a clearer timetable for Java’s shutdown.

The studio is still non-committal about a hard calendar date but does state that early next year will be when the Java client for the MMORPG will no longer work. The announcement once again sites security as a primary factor, saying that most players using the old client are doing so for nefarious purposes such as botting, so the old launcher will be going the way of the dodo in 2025.

In other OSRS news, the MMORPG is spooling up for Leagues V on November 27th, providing in-depth looks at regional server opening times, dates for feature arrivals like relics and combat masteries, and a general FAQ. It’s chock-full of granular details for those who are ready for the mode’s return.

This week has also got some news out of RuneScape as well: A new dev blog provides a close look at the upcoming new level cap of 110 for the Runecraftin skill and its features, like players’ ability to craft a higher-tier wizard staff and learn updated spells, while this week’s newsletter shows off several Game Jam developments and casts a spotlight across the current double XP event that’s happening until November 25th..
