Greg Street talks about Project Ghost’s central city and its interplay with classes and missions

Fantastic Pixel Castle’s Greg Street decided this past weekend to waft out a random Twitter thread about his developing MMO project Ghost, and once again his mind is turning back to the central hub city that featured in its recent gameplay preview video and rationalizing why there’s just one major city to begin with.

“We have one city in the game because we really want to focus players and their communities there rather than having them too spread out,” Street explains. “Our hope is that players care about and want to protect the city. This isn’t an urban dystopia.”

Hving a centralized place for friends new and old to gather isn’t the only reason, as the city’s multiple factions – which operate more like those found in Planescape – are all associated with the MMO’s classes as well as the missions and stories they tell. He notes how these connections can ultimately steer the game’s class and mission design, giving a theoretical municipal worker-style class that’s associated with a criminal faction as an example.

Incidentally, Street notes a vague plan to ship Ghost with the possibility of 30 classes that will all have “strong themes and interesting gameplay” that’s sorted into these factions. So don’t call it a lobby; call it the spoke of the game’s larger wheel.
