If we all take some insider reporting at face value, things over at Ubisoft Singapore’s multiplayer pirating game Skull and Bones are doing just fine, and in fact the game already has plans for a full second year of content.
This information comes from anonymous sources reporting to Insider Gaming, who claim that Year 2 of the title is already mapped out and will come online early next year. What isn’t elaborated on here is precisely how much the next year will bring, but insiders say there will be new world tiers, new POIs, and some new PvP game modes. The studio is also considering crossover events, such as one with Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag to tie into a re-release of the single-player title.
Ubisoft’s continued support of Skull and Bones for at least one more year might be surprising on the face of it, particularly since player count indications and player reviews on Steam aren’t exactly encouraging – to say nothing of the fact that Ubisoft is sunsetting shooter XDefiant and kicking hundreds of workers to the curb. However, insiders say that the wider player numbers “might surprise people,” though Insider Gaming was unable to get any hard data.
Whether this is full support of an active multiplayer game or the sunk cost fallacy in action considering S&B’s extremely long and troubled development is up to gamers to decide, but one way or the other, pirates of the digital Indian Ocean are apparently getting more reasons to set sail soon.
