The Daily Grind: How many players does an MMO need to be considered healthy?

A while back on Reddit, I saw a comment – I think it was about Throne & Liberty – that pushed back hard against the usual online “dead game” discourse. What leaped out at me is that the user put hard numbers on what a “reasonable” playerbase should be.

I don’t aim to start a referendum on Throne & Liberty’s health, here; by the time this Daily Grind goes live, who knows what T&L’s daily counts will actually look like. Rather, I want to talk about what sort of playerbase we expect out of our core MMORPGs. Is 35K-40K people right? How about concurrency vs. total numbers? How many players does an MMO need to be considered healthy?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
