The thing I love about City of Heroes is that it scales remarkably well. If I want to just play the game or a character at a very basic level, I can. I can tackle advancement and character progression very simplistically, just slotting in basic single and invention enhancements. You can pretty much make it through all of the core content that way.
But if I want to really trick out a character, the world of special and set enhancements opens up, and it’s anything but simple. I mean, players built tools for setting up enhancement sets for a reason: It isn’t something you can just eyeball and smack together, not if you want to really maximize your efforts. It takes a lot of fiddling and number-crunching to put together a genuinely good build tailored to your playstyle.
I want to talk about MMOs that funnel a lot of their difficulty into the character or even gear building part of the game rather than into the combat or world itself. What are the most challenging upgrade systems in MMORPGs?
