Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2017 awards continue today with our award for Best MMO Holiday Event, which was awarded to The Secret World last year. This award is meant for the MMORPG with the best holiday-themed event that took place during 2017 specifically, regardless of when the game itself was launched. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!

The Massively OP staff pick for Best MMO Holiday of 2017 is…

LORD OF THE RINGS ONLINE

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Pokemon Go’s Halloween event. As a major critic of the game, I was surprised that the combination of double candy (grind currency) and new Pokemon (largely fluff) paired with a sale on raid passes (think quarters for RL arcade play) would hype the community so well, but it did. Add in the remixed Lavender Town theme… man, it really set the mood, both in game and real life. I could go on and on about the good experiences I had IRL during the event but instead, I’ll just cast my vote. Runner-up: Still WoW Brewfest. It’s probably one of the few things that ever tempts to into going back to the game. Ram/kodo racing was always fun as heck. Hey, when’s Blizzard working on a kart racer, anyway?

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna): Lord of the Rings Online’s anniversary events this year were a spectacle that was even enjoyable from the sidelines. SSG really went all out for the 10th anniversary with a holiday that wasn’t just cribbed from real-life; it was brand-new, fitting for the game, and apparently creative to boot. Great to see in a genre full of rehashes of snowballs and batwings.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre): World of Warcraft’s Silithus event. One of the things that I like about MMOs is that they can produce culture and touchstones separate from the in-game lore and the surrounding real-world history. The opening of Ahn-Qiraj deserve a holiday to commemorate the event, and the funny thing is that it manages to be a nice nostalgia trip for players and the sort of even that Azeroth’s residents would also want to connect with. Runner-up: FFXIV’s Anniversary dungeon.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster): LOTRO 10th Anniversary events really rocked our socks off this year. I mean, 30 new quests that had us spanning all over Middle-earth in a variety of activities, from following in the footsteps of main characters to spotting wildlife to pub crawls? It reminded us of how special this game world is and why we love it.

MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie): LOTRO’s Fall Festival. As much as I love The Secret World’s Samhain event, there was too little of it in Secret World Legends to win this year. My vote goes to LOTRO’s Fall Festival thanks to the new quest of spooky stories, but more so for the tease that something will happen in a year! I am eagerly looking forward to seeing if that plays out.

Tina Lauro Pollock (@purpletinabeans): Allowing the new mounts within the usual Guild Wars 2 Mad King mix this Halloween was very refreshing indeed: I feel as though it encouraged high populations on sack runs and also added a bit more maddening flair to the usual seasonal happenings.
