Diablo IV works to ‘get itemization right,’ promises something ‘chunky’ for BlizzConline

When you come to a Diablo game, your brain is often just craving one thing: those loot explosions. Gear is a major source of those juicy endorphins, and it’s a part of the game that Blizzard knows it absolutely has to get right as it continues to craft Diablo IV.

After a “top to bottom” review of Diablo IV’s itemization, Blizzard announced that it’s reworked some key aspects of drops in the game. The studio said that in making these changes, it focused on three things: enhancing “fantasy hooks” for classes, supporting deeper customization, and trying to hit a sweet spot between Diablo II and Diablo III’s item depth.

“Whether it’s anticipating the next piece of perfectly rolled godly gear or kicking around item combinations in your head like a mad scientist, items are undoubtedly a major part of what makes Diablo so compelling and so different from other games,” the studio said.

The Diablo IV team also discussed how it’s been tweaking the class skill trees, adjusting how class stats work, and making weapons feel better as they are used. And as for what’s next?

“Speaking of which, our next update will take place during BlizzConline, rather than in blog form. We’ve read speculation about what it could be and want to ensure you that it is something chunky indeed. Without spoiling the surprise, let’s just say it involves a new version of the campfire scene we showed you last BlizzCon.”
