Who’s pumped for New World to come out next year? There’s a lot of hope and expectations riding on how much Amazon Game Studio can improve and flesh out the upcoming MMO before its 2021 release, and a key part of this is fine-tuning New World’s combat system.

On Tuesday, Amazon put the title through a “Forge and Fury” alpha update to bring New World up to its standards for combat. Amazon said that the three pillars it has for this system are to make it skill-based and action-oriented, visceral and high-impact, and offering depth and a wide range of builds.

As such, the dev team took out the ability for basic attacks to interrupt fighters, killed the global cooldown, sped up weapon switching, and worked to get that weapon balance just right.

The patch also brought in the new two-handed great axe (which “excels at large, sweeping attacks”), added consequence-free PvP duels, and introduced the massive tower shield.
