MOP reader HotPinkGoblin recently remarked that the march of time had changed their attitude about playing MMOs – in what I would consider a healthy way.
“When I was younger, I remember doing a dungeon in WoW over and over again to the get the Ashes of Al’ar,” HPG said. “Since then, I’ve taken a very ‘if the RNG gods are kind, they are kind; if not, whatever’ sort of attitude. I work every day; I don’t want to go to work when it’s time to play.”
I have allowed too many games to not just feel like work but actually become work, and I’m not talking about my job here at MOP! I know it’s baked into my personality that I need to turn everything into some sort of hyper-efficient market/econ stressor, even the most benign fluffy little games, and if I’m not right on top of stopping myself from going too far down that path, I can ruin those games by turning them into part-time jobs – not so much from grinds or quests for drops but from obsessing over my crafts or auctions.
Does playing MMOs ever feel like a job to you? Are there MMOs you avoid because they turn into mini jobs? Or are you able to navigate this problem with the enviable casual chill of our reader HotPinkGoblin?
