The majority of large language model (LLM) AI tool proponents suggest that the tech can be utilized to fill out a virtual game world with personalities that can be completely distinct, letting devs craft NPCs that have individual motivations and reactions that can make them all but indistinguishable to human players. We’ll see if that holds any water as we cast our eyes to Aetherian Chronicles, an in-development MMORPG from Filipino indie developer Kingfisher Platforms Ltd. that leverages LLM to fill out its game world.

According to a Reddit post from one of the game’s devs, Aetherian Chronicles “uses LLM to create AI players that plays [sic], talks [sic] and interacts [sic] with you in the game world. Similar to you, AI players will have goals and progress through the game and plays [sic] daily, like you do! You will be able to party up, make friends, chat with and fight bosses and general monsters alongside AI controlled players.”

As for gameplay itself, the game is a 2.5-D sidescrolling “casual” affair that lets players party up with these bots or other players to take on monsters, fight bosses, and hunt for hundreds of items. The game also promises some other activities like dancing, chatting, or grinding.

Aetherian Chronicles is currently accepting emails to subscribe to its newsletter and be considered for future alpha tests, while its Steam page suggests that launch will be sometime in 2025.
