For everyone mentioning FFXIV, SE has FREE TRIALS as part of that over bloated number. I’m not defending GW2 but understand the numbers being told.

Im one of those players and I played for about an hour before giving it up. :/ lol

I’d get involved in the pissing match but unlike the rest of you I’m busy doing something actually fun as opposed to typing salty comments about a game you don’t even play to just be a bunch of snobs.

I only alt tabbed to eat something.

PS Maybe if you had something as fun and engaging as I’ve got right now you wouldn’t be wasting your time crapping on a game you supposedly don’t care about any way.

Friendly reminder that the base game of GW2 went F2P a few years ago to where those players encompass not only all the people who bought into the game and long dropped off, but also a bunch of freely registered accounts that haven’t paid a dime.

Excellent, I love numbers, meaningful ones are even more interesting.

These numbers are always meaningless and no different than FF14 announcing the same exact numbers…for a game with a sub. WoW did the same thing back when they said WoW’s had over 100 million unique players. Current players are what really matters and no one ever gives those anymore.

Other than EvE, which has a current online counter in the launcher.

Of course, half or more of those are just alts. :P

You want the concurrent players now? Numbers from right before the expansion launch?

That would so instantly outdated!

And it’s not like NCSoft publishes for everyone to see GW2’s quarterly revenue!

What exactly are you trying to say? It’s kinda normal if you consider that the game is 5 years old and a new expansion was on the horizon.

Beside that the free updates were, at least for me an a bunch of people in my guild, by far not enough to solidify an ingame purchase with real money.

? wat
Only read linked article’s title with the quarterly revenue numbers in it, instead of my comment?

I questioned people reasoning of demanding here recent concurrent player numbers instead!

Since it’s as useless & totally outdated right now at the very launch day as these above published numbers, which the same people critisized here!

But they totally ignored, that GW2 actually are one of the very few (especially Western ones), which still publishes revenue numbers every quarter through NCSoft!

Reader

Yeah but it doesn’t break down the revenue, it could be lots of players spending very little or a few whales spending a lot. Also since its B2P it doesn’t really show how many are still logging on.

And how many active players? Like 1 mil?

Reader
Sorenthaz

That seems a bit overly optimistic.

90% of those human warriors are cosplaying as Arthas.

Those numbers mean absolutely nothing. The only number that is important in anyway is concurrent player base and oh look that number is not shown. Wish GW2 was an actual sequel to GW1 which was amazing

Uh…wat

Millions of players that purchased the game don’t matter because i don’t like this game!

Reader
Ben Stone

It didn’t say that they purchased it. The base game has been F2P for quite some time. I think at last count before conversion it was 5 million that purchased. The other 6 million would have been FTP mostly.

Reader
Loopy

That’s fair. But my point stands that these are not small numbers to brag about, regardless of the context, especially if the only counter argument is “this game is not that game i wanted, so therefore numbers don’t matter”.

Strongly disagree, that’s not fixing it.

Maybe its just me, but every time I see someone use that term my estimate of their IQ drops by about 50 points…..

Yeah. This is just a PR release with (supposedly) true but mostly irrelevant numbers just to try for a bit of hype. Not something I would consider newsworthy, but not a lie either.

Reader
drelkag

So Guild Wars 2 and FFXIV are around the same amount of total players? I always got the impression GW2 has done better than XIV.

Reader
Schmidt.Capela

Unless they further clarify it, I will assume this 11M number is the total number of accounts rather than actual active players. Not too shabby a number, but not exactly a great one since it’s a F2P game, and it doesn’t necessarily reflects the game’s current health; Free Realms had over twice that many “players” when it was closed down five years after launch.

Reader
Bruno Brito

Pretty much. No concurrent players numbers, so, they’re not as confident. F2P means a lot of non-active accounts, and they didn’t mention anywhere those 11 million are active.

Honestly, 11m for a f2p like GW2 sounds…underwhelming?

Well to be fair GW2 was B2P for 3 years. If they release F2P It would be underwhelming, but for transitioning i think its quite allright.

You have to remember the ‘hype’ factor, releasing F2P with hype gets way more players than release B2P with hype.

Reader
Sorenthaz

I mean, you’ve also got the ~3 million? purchases in its first year where likely a majority of them stopped playing years ago.

Also the game was released in China, so that’s going to boost numbers up by at least a few million.

Reader
Matthäus Wey

Yeah but the game is 5 years old and wasn’t F2P for a rather long time. Don’t forget that.

Reader
Bruno Brito

We’re not. GW2 was a sales success. It didn’t live up to the hype tho. Heart of Thorns wasn’t nearly as successful.

You’re saying “was” as if the game is in the past. It’s not. POF launched yesterday and HoT was successful enough for their parent company to support the launch of a second expansion.
