Drakensang Online adding new continent, increasing level cap

If Drakensang Online isn’t normally on your radar, you might want to check it out in the near future, particularly if you enjoy action MMOs. The title is preparing its largest-ever content update for an unspecified future date.

The update will add a brand-new continent of Lor’Tac to the game, increase the level cap from 45 to 50, improve the graphics, and overhaul the skill and talent system. Lor’Tac is a rainforest-themed area inspired by Aztec and Polynesian cultures, and it includes 10 maps and many new monsters to fight.

Drakensang’s team has been working hard to improve the game in other ways these past few months with better group finding tools, the removal of Crystals of Truth, and making the Dwarf available to everyone for free. You can check out a Drakensang trailer after the jump to see if this is the OARPG you’ve been missing.

I started playing this game in the first beta, and revisited several months ago. I really like the style of this game, but last time I played, it still seemed very pay-to-win. This is probably no surprise as it’s run by Big Point who believe in selling advantages (http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/07/bigpoint-says-game-publishers-should-sell-in-game-advantages/).

Anyway, one thing I remember is there are items called “Essences” that are basically ammo you can equip, and your abilities will use a certain number of them each cast. These essences make your abilities do 100/200/300% more damage. You can find essences as drops, but of course the higher tier ones don’t drop often and are available in the cash shop. The essences used to give full effect in pvp, but then they were reduced to 10/20/30%, and now it appears they give no effect at all (I guess that’s one good thing).

Also, this game has locked chests in the dungeons that require keys that are available in the cash shop.

The cash shop currency drops in-game, but in very small quantities.

I think the reason why I din’t like the game was beause it looked too easy. Could be that it gets better at high level, just played at low levels.

Could someone write a few words about it compared to Diablo 3 and Path of Exile? Is it grindy? Free-ish? Hybrid-possibility chars, like PoE, or Classes like Dio? Good endgame? Etc.

I always see advertising on German tv for Drakensang online. It’s kind of fun, to see how the various TV Companies. Have bought the promotional rights, to the lesser known MMOs. And now fills the free advertising Space, with mmo promotional trailers etc.

The music of Drakensang online is remarkable. The way it seamlessly mixes different songs together to fit the level of danger is really well done. The game has good gameplay as well. Great skill effects and challenging enemies. It’s not procedural as I recall but the levels are well designed.  Good to see that it’s getting an update of this magnitude.
