An Ingress convention could happen in 2015

Augmented reality MMO Ingress could be heading for its own official convention this year, thanks to the mobile game’s popularity and growth.

Google’s Niantic Labs recently said that a 2015 convention is “likely.” The studio has already been holding player meet-ups in various cities, with a Tokyo gathering drawing 5,000 people. Ingress has been downloaded 10 million times since its launch in late 2013.

The game requires players to go to physical locations in the real world and claim portals in order to control territory. If you’d like a good overview of Ingress, check out the video after the jump.

Oh my god, these games are starting already? I won’t join in for a while. Want better tech and games. But I’ll do it. Even if a decade from now.

I would play but the only portal miles around me is the post office which hasn’t been contested for months.

Downloaded the app and was surprised that there were numerous portals within walking distance of where I live. So even though I’ve got flu, fever, and all that fun stuff I couldn’t resist going out to see how this works.

Went and claimed some portals, did some links, etc. The app is very cool and atmospheric but oh does it drain the battery. I’ll have to delve into it more before I form an opinion,  but right now I’m at least intrigued.

My only complaint about Ingress is with my phone plugged in, my battery power still drops. Still it’s a neat distraction when on break working in a downtown area.

It just externalizes the MMO concept. So instead of planning to gear up game characters and doing progression raids, you get together with your local community and raid the other faction, break their links, buff captured nodes, farm up keys for linking and weapons + utility items from either having enemy nodes or your own faction’s.
Gear in this game could be a comfortable pair of walking shoes, or a cellphone with better battery life.

It’s meant to be used while walking. That said however, it’ll cook right through your battery life unless plugged in, so the game lends itself more towards car, but that wasn’t the initial intent. You can also run the browser site /intel to play dispatch or plan raids.
Of you live in an area with an active downtown, the best way to farm hands-down is to park, get out of your car and simply walk through the downtown area in a grid hacking and linking.

Well, I’m moving to Japan in three months, maybe I can catch the Tokyo gathering!

I want to like Ingress more but it just hasn’t worked for me. Maybe it’s because, where I live, I have to do it all driving, and that seems really wasteful. Plus, unless I want to endanger everyone around me, I really need one of my kids to do the actual gameplay as I’m driving.
