This LotRO lore video made me reinstall the game

You know, I need another fantasy MMORPG in my life like I need another hole in my head. But thanks to a nifty lore-centric video published this week by Turbine, I’m (re)installing Lord of the Rings Online and dusting off my stable of alts.

The vid runs for about an hour, and it features lead world-builder and lore monkey Chris Pierson chatting with Mythgard’s Corey Olsen and Wheaton College English professor Michael Drout about Tolkien’s works and Turbine’s interpretations of them. Click past the cut for the full clip!

So many great aspects to this game, including lore and music system (which I find especially intriguing), but the one time I tried it, the combat was the clunkiest of any MMO I’ve ever played…and I couldn’t get past it. Maybe it was the class? Trying to find reasons to give it another try lol

I meant specifically this year (which we are almost 1/4 through already)
The pace of development has definitely slowed. When they announced no more big expansions everybody thought that meant the same amount of content but delivered in smaller amounts more often. What it actually meant was smaller updates less often.
The new region is a joke. Central Gondor landscape is really beautiful but the quests in the area are few and far between. They had to put in a bunch of daily quests as filler and worse they gated them behind reputation levels so you had to grind rep just to unlock dailies!
And how quickly we forget the West Gondor fiasco – do all the content and still not enough XP to hit level cap.
The Beorning class was just another failure in game direction (along with skill trees, mounted combat and Buggy Battles). Most people are bored of running the same content over and over, they don’t really want to do it again on a new alt. The class was broken at launch and the last 2 patches mainly consisted of fixes for the class. It was effort that could have been better spent else where.
The new Big Battle was extremely buggy at launch and incomplete. Its still buggy today.
I await to see what will drop in April but I expect to be disappointed. Calling it an ‘instance cluster’ is probably a misnomer since they already said they wouldn’t do a ‘cluster’ per se. We might get some 3/6-mans but I doubt more than one or two.

DaemonHardrod Maggie_May The Final Frontier is THE SILMARILLION.  Oh, what a grand and glorious book it is… you could make an amazing trilogy from it… but don’t let Peter Jackson touch it !!

Cambruin crazymanjared Rift has a better model.  You don’t have to buy quests.  That’s the important part.  Being able to buy stuff in the cash shop through grinding isn’t as important as being able to enjoy the gameplay.  The only problem is that juts out is that Rift gates souls like lotro gates classes.  Anything that wasn’t there from launch is unlocked through the cash shop.  That’s bad game design pure and simple.  No class or soul should be gated by money.  That’s too unbalanced.  Look at monster play.  We all get reavers but not the other classes.  That means a flood of reavers and that means unbalancing group play.  The moores should have a better blend.  The defiler should have been free as well.

I’ve been playing the game since May 07 and it’s still good despite the usual F2P issues. The current team have begun the turn around from the problems with the Helms Deep expansion and the recent content – West & Central Gondor is as good as anywhere else in the game. At least that idiot of a community manager they used to have – Sapience – has gone so the forums are ok to post in.

For anyone new looking to try the game certainly recommend to wait until those servers that are to close have been identified. Once you have started playing, find a kin and become a part of the excellent communities that the game has. Just don’t play the game solo as you’ll be missing out on a ton of excellent group content that’s been released over the years.

q945 >Because they sure haven’t shown any significant developments in-game of late.

You mean new class, new region, new BB-instances? Or incoming in April another new region with instance cluster? Is this insignificant development?

BKone ChristopherPierce melissamcdon Yeah because nothing says Trek like going into disputes all guns blazing. If you like it, good for you and I know many do, but it’s not what I would have wanted out of a Trek MMO.

crazymanjared Do you know of a better F2P model? You can literally unlock everything ingame by just playing, not spending a single penny. Every other F2P MMO out there offers you no way whatsoever to unlock items from stores without purchasing the currency with real money. Sure, it’ll involve grinding, but that’s about the very core of each and every MMO out there, here you’ll get some reward out of it other than mere rep or tokens to trade.

That being said, I’m no fan of the store and would also prefer a P2P model. I absolutely hate this current F2P mindset and the kind of players it attracts.

Oleg Chebeneev Some of the animations and combat was changed with the expansion update, but i totally agree with the character models, i stopped playing my male elf, they look like crap.
