Monday’s blurb about NCsoft and its AI research was sort of interesting, don’t you think? The Korean firm isn’t the first MMO company to highlight advances in artificial intelligence, though. Heck, Star Citizen was talking up its AI a year ago.

What about you, MOP readers? Do you care about AI advances in your games, or would you prefer that developers focus on player-vs.-player mechanics, systems, and the like? Vote after the cut!

Estranged BalsBigBrother Koshelkin I wasn’t serious. Thanks for your comment nonetheless. Your premade wasn’t an exception. Especially for a premade it wasn’t an exception I daresay. The rough talk is mostly in pugs or/and from solo players(seems people talking alot of smack have a hard time finding friends). Alot of people like to play high&mighty and laudate themselves for killing people which don’t know better but generally there were always alot of people willing to teach and carry new people. PvP it’s like with PvE. Get a good guild or a group of regulars to play with and your fun will increase exponentially. If you don’t (want to) you better grow a thick skin.

I like the better A.I version personally.  Having played both PvP and PvE a fair amount, I prefer to accomplish task with people in a co-op type environment…  Also the A.I doesn’t call you a cheater when you win or a noob when you lose…

But that’s because they let you win. They’re nerfed down so that players can win, otherwise you and me wouldn’t have a chance at all. Making AI pilots hardcore isn’t difficult, it’s the balance of AI vs player that’s difficult and needs tuning. Personally, I’d welcome an advanced mode of Vanduul Swarm, where the beginner level starts one step higher than level 15 in the basic level and continues to level 30.

Kanbe It’s been heard from every week. The team’s pretty open. It hasn’t been getting actively marketed, though, which seems good, since no amount of “this is super early pre-alpha” disclaiming seems to stem the tide of cynicism from gamers with the memories of goldfish.

There was this one game I heard of a long, long time ago that was talking about some really cool AIR ideas that would make the world a living thing. I think it was called Ever Quest……Next maybe? Sadly the developers have dropped the game down a black hole and it hasn’t been heard from since. Those AI go a though were easily one of the most exciting things for mmo’s I’ve heard in a long time.

To me this isn’t a question of PvP vs PvE combat because computers today are so powerful that AI has to be nerfed anyway to allow players a fighting chance.

AI advancement to me is more about making AI smarter so it can interact with players on a broader scale. For instance, when you approach an AI in the game, regardless of it being a person on the ground or (a person in) a ship, they should act more like a human would do so that it gets less and less obvious it’s an AI you’re interacting with. That is what AI advancement is to me and why I support further research and development of AI.
