City of Heroes is returning… as a chat client

63

The dream of seeing City of Heroes reborn is still just that — a dream. But through the hard efforts of fans of the superhero title, a portion of the game could soon be back online.

A team at CoH Titan is on the verge of releasing a new product called Soon™, which will allow players to interact, emote, and chat in City of Heroes zones. The software will only be for chatting and socializing, as there will not be any combat or enemy NPCs available. Even so, players should be able to bring in their characters and bios from Icon, an earlier effort from the team, and enjoy a return to their old stomping grounds. The devs said that friends list and chat channels are in the client and that they are working on mimicking travel powers for a future update.

The team will be making an official announcement of Soon™ and posting a FAQ in the near future.

Baby steps for now. I’ll take that. All of my heroes that are facets of me still live and are quietly, anxiously, waiting to once again take the fight to the enemy in Paragon City.

melissamcdon Yes, when you download the tequila game client, it allows you to play offline in a version called ICON to design costumes, (which also lets you invoke various game NPCs) or Paragon Chat, which takes you back into the online game world.

Paragon Chat soft-launched last night as beta 0.95 (more work needs to be done, but it is up and running)

Codewalker, the leader of the team making this,  said the following on COHTitan’s message board this morning.

“”Since a few people asked, here’s a few statistics gathered last night.
The
maximum number of concurrent users peaked at around 200. At that time,
the XMPP server’s CPU usage was about 20-25% (around 1 full core on a 4
core system). Outgoing bandwidth was around 8Mbps at that time, and
incoming averaging 2Mbps. Peak traffic was 14Mbps.
At one point
we had around 120 players in Atlas. The one hiccup we had was when about
100 of those who were following the livestream all tried to mapmove to
Pocket D at once. That caused something to go wrong on the server and it
got stuck in a loop using 99% CPU and was unresponsive – chat traffic
wasn’t being passed. I restarted the service, which kicked everybody out
momentarily, and re-established the default 30 player cap for Atlas.
Once everybody got back in we had 3 Pocket D instances and 3 Atlas Park
Instances.
After things had settled down a bit, I changed Atlas
and Pocket D back to being uncapped. So far the issue has not repeated
itself. When I get some spare time I’ll dig into the server logs to see
what it got stuck on.
Since the launch, 788 unique accounts have logged into the Titan XMPP server. No doubt most of those were using Paragon Chat.””

Will the previous music associated with each zone still be there too? Or is it IP locked as well?
