Diablo II celebrates its 15th anniversary

22

You might not have realized, but yesterday was Diablo II’s 15th anniversary. Blizzard’s hit action-RPG came out on June 29, 2000 and has been running nonstop since then. Its popularity and lifespan has undoubtedly been helped by its online multiplayer feature offered through Battle.net.

Diablo II is not only one of Blizzard’s best-selling games, but one of its fastest-selling ones as well. The title sold a million copies in its first week, putting it in the Guinness Book of World Records for that year. Ironically, the current title-holder for fastest-selling is Diablo III.

The folks over at Kotaku put together a quick video to salute the title’s birthday, which you can watch after the jump.

Diablo series had some of the best gear of any game I’ve ever played, even still.    I still have nostalgia about my unique Demonspike Coat armor, and my Merciless Bow of Thunder.
I was really delighted when LOTRO featured “light” oils for archery that gave me back my lightning bow :)

Armsbend Estranged we couldn’t believe the sheer quality for its time when we played the original Diablo.   The photorealism of the flames on launch screen, the quality of sound particularly, and it ran on such modest hardware.   And…gasp… Multiplayer!

Loved D1 and D2, but about 3 months into D2 I was persuaded to try EverQuest, and never looked back from 3D mmos again.

Greaterdivinity anatheod i mean that back then ppl didnt care that much about “optimal” setting and more about fun which created some really fun builds.
Yes spamming was an issue and being tied to your choices till the end sucked (heck i built the same paladin 3 times till i could get it right) but it kinda made everyone unique (?). I dont know maybe what i am saying is clouded by nostalgia.

Estranged I love snark dont apologize.  I’m not even a huge Blizz fangirl I just think they put out solid product.  Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but its always quality.  You really cant say that about most developers.

Armsbend Estranged Gosh.  Well, they have managed to make a MOBA that I can tolerate.  Will pass on the card game.  SC and HotS are limited in scope.   Never tried Diablo III, scared me off at launch.

Anyway, I shouldn’t have been snarky, this is about Diablo II.
