Destiny is adding microtransactions, starting with emotes

Bungie is opening another revenue pipeline for its popular Destiny, as the game will introduce microtransactions next week.

“This coming Tuesday, October 13th, Tess Everis will return to The Tower with a new look, a new storefront, and some new items to sell,” Bungie posted. “Initially, Tess will offer eighteen brand new emotes. Like the trio of emotes offered via The Taken King Collector’s Edition, these emotes are completely optional, and won’t impact the action game in any way.”

The studio will be giving some free silver — Destiny’s MTX currency — to all players to buy an emote or two and said that it will be using the proceeds from sales to “bolster the service provided by [its] live team.”

According to Kotaku this isn’t just that they’re putting in a cash store, it’s also that all future DLC will be free (not the boxed expansions though). Given that there was no season pass on sell with The Taken King’s launch that seems a very safe bet at this point.

That was fantastic. Not as good as an USA Up All Night B-movie, but solid.

So many posts, so much time to reflect. The tail that wags the dog is only an extension of the hind quarters.

Not today. When someone judges a person based on their choice of entertainment, I sorta just pick at them like a child does their food.

Archebius mourasaint GabeNewellFetish solipsis DA: O had mechanics I enjoyed just fine, but the game otherwise felt like a Baldurs Gate game minus any kind of interesting story, setting, or personality. I think DA: I improved on that a bunch even if it continued the move away from the BG-like combat.

TheChiHawk ihatevnecks Well the three that are already in game are all class-specific dance emotes. I don’t see much difference between one emote and another myself, but I guess that means they’re more involved than just pointing at something.
Personally I prefer having the point emote equipped, because I can spam it when idiot fire team members are going the wrong way on a map, or constantly dying because they’re not perceptive enough to realize standing in lightning = dead. Over, and over, and over..

Congratulations Bungievision, you’ve officially outdone EA and the SWTOR payment model.

“Support the live team?”  I thought that was already done with the ginormous box price of the expansion, forcing your existing playerbase to double-dip if they wanted the Taken King?
I’m so glad I cancelled my pre-order on this game after beta.  I’ve been following Destiny news, hoping TTK would bring enough changes I’d want to give the game another chance.  NOPE!
