Star Trek Online offers ships and shuttles for charity

In the mirror universe, they have charities to encourage bullying, or something.
It’s kind of nice to get something in exchange for donating to charity. Admittedly there’s always the question of how much money goes to charity and how much goes to something else, whether or not it helps in the long run, and so forth… but the core principle is nice. You get something, organizations that need money get money. So, for example, you could donate money to anti-bullying charity and get several new ships in Star Trek Online.

The offer running now has a selection of eight small craft and substitute starting ships available for $1; you can select as many or as few of them as you’d like in exchange for $1 or more, with the Mirror Universe Danube Runabout exclusively available through this promotion. Players who donate will also receive a code for Mirror Admiral Leeta as a bridge officer. Check out the offer page if you want to donate against bullying, or even just want lots of new small ships and like the price.

SallyBowls1 It depends on the company.  Some do not take the tax deduction but many companies do.  My caring really feeds from the now normal practice of companies guilt-ing their customers into donating while they reap all of the benefits.

I dont know how STO does it.  I’m not surprised Blizzard does it on the up and up they are a large company with lots of eyes on them.

Armsbend I can buy the tax writeoff for yourself.

OTOH, let’s  take the previous Blizzard pet “For every Argi purchased between December 3 and December 31, 100% of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to support ebola relief efforts.” So if I purchase the $10 pet from Blizzard, thus resulting in $10 in taxable revenue  and they donate 100% of the $10 and get a $10 tax deduction, then how has Blizzard’s gotten any net tax benefit or any direct financial benefit??? Revenue +10, Deductions +10 Revenue-deductions = +0 (Good will of customers and employees and PR – the usual soft payouts of corporate charity.)

Most of the people giving money are doing it to get whatever is offered in game so the charities still benifit from these types of things and see a lot more money than they would without the drive from the game. In the end thats what’s important.
It doesnt hurt anyone when everyone involved gets a win.

Armsbend I guess no “good” deed goes unpunished…  But I do understand that with all the scams and stuff out there, it’s not a bad idea to make sure stuff like this is all legit and proper.

You are donating money so a  company (most companies) can get a tax write off with someone else’s money.  If you want to donate money to a charity – insure your money goes to the charity by donating to the charity yourself – and get the tax write off.

Use this rule every day a checkout person asks if you want to donate a dollar, etc.

They T6 bundle was limited to the first 2500 and sold out within 3-4 hours of the drive starting. A few hours after that, we hit the $25,000 raised and unlocked the Mirror Leeta bridge officer. In fact, the drive was so successful that the donations site had problems processing all the payments as it was getting slammed with so many people using it. They’re still sorting out some payments from yesterday as of this post and scrambling to get those people their ship packages. I think that’s rather impressive for STO.

I’m surprised these deals don’t happen more for games with cash shops. You give people the incentive of helping a cause and they’re more likely to open up the wallets. Make it a monthly occurrence and I think the games would see a nice return. Or maybe I’m crazy. heh

Still nice to have some extra ships to pad out the admiralty fleet, plus the unique skin on the runabout and the mirror universe Leeta BOFF.
