Tribes: Ascend’s next patch aims to ‘spiritually align’ with the franchise

Hi-Rez has posted an open letter to Tribes: Ascend’s community on Reddit. The forthcoming Out of the Blue patch is a huge undertaking for a four-person dev team, Hi-Rez says, but said dev team desired to see the game “return to form” and feel “more spiritually aligned” with older Tribes titles.

Simultaneously, the team’s goal has been to avoid alienating all of Ascend’s players, and the patch has since become a much bigger deal than simply “a couple of maps and small quality of life fixes.” The letter details a number of specific changes, and it also says that there are more possible combos than ever before due to additional weapon slots, the reduction of classes, the new weapon class system, and various new devices.

We’ll see.  I haven’t played in years but if the game seems to be able to muster up any of the magic of Tribes 1 (I’m the one guy who seems to have hated the Tribes 2 changes) then perhaps I’ll be trying to find the scrap of paper on my desk that has my password scribbled on it.

Koshelkin Ben Pielstick Rheem Octuris Sorenthaz Madda  I’m faily sure Darkstar was a modified version of either the Quake or Quake 2 engines. Almost everything not based on the unreal engine is. Hell, even Dota 2 can trace its roots back to Quake.

Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of documentation about the darkstar engine, as it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. While I can’t prove it, I stand by my statement that Starsiege Tribes was in fact based on one of the quake engines or a modification thereof.

Rheem Octuris Sorenthaz Madda To the best of my knowledge Starsiege: Tribes was not built using the Quake 2 engine.

Sorenthaz Madda I might be one of those that you’re complaining about. If you’re accusing me of hating how every bullet weapon was a “Hitscan” weapon (put reticle on enemy, pull trigger, hit instantly), or hated on the health regen, yes, I’m one of those. I’ve had so many opponents run during combat to try and get their regen to kick in, afraid to die, or trying to outspeed me during a battle so I can’t hit them. Autos are also still heavily abused, and several people use them religiously, though it’s not as bad as it used to be.

The thing is, Tribes has always been about projectiles. ALWAYS. The only weapon I can even think was hit scan, or like hitscat, was the laser rifle and maybe, MAYBE, the ELF Gun. All the others were projectile. It was a very skill focused game, rather than pop up from cover shootfest that CoD started up. Sadly, the game reached out desperately for those people, and it lost violently in getting the audience that actually loved Tribes. It’s why I left, anyway.

Thankfully, the game is returning to it’s roots. None of this Two Weapons Only bullshit that CoD rammed down our throats in the next patch. Dunno about regen, but I’m hoping they attach it to the little kit tubes that people drop when they die. All weapons save for pistols and the laser rifle are going complete projectile (this means a LOT less autoaim win), and the disk launchers are getting overhauled and upgraded. The game is basically moving to where it should have been all along.

Not sure how to feel about the classes and such either. I will admit I liked the idea of specialized classes, but that’s because Renegades and Shifter were my jam back in Tribes 1. We’ll see how it pans out though.

Sorenthaz Madda  The skiing mechanic was actually just an artifact of the Quake 2 engine. You could do it in all the Quake games, although it was more evident in Quake 3 Arena, especially on the larger maps from its expansion.

Wild_Phil  They don’t really plan to do a full revival/relaunch of it.  It’s very much a passion project for now.  And they tried to put it on consoles way back when but every developer they went to pretty much said that it would never sell well on consoles due to its mechanics/controls.

Madda Sorenthaz Pretty sure no one else has really done the skiing mechanic of Tribes though.

Sorenthaz Madda Perhaps.

The problem is that there are so many games that can do what Tribes can do nowadays, back when the series was at its peak of popularity.

Plus, no silly hat collecting. So it must suck.
