War Thunder fan creates a full virtual reality cockpit

Flight sim fans are often on the cutting edge of technology and peripherals, usually more so than the rest of the gaming crowd. After all, when your goal is to replicate the complete flight experience, you’re going to need some serious hardware.

One gamer has put together an impressive virtual cockpit that combines the Oculus Rift headset with a detailed instrument panel and flight chair to bring him as close as possible to the real thing. He’s very effusive in his appreciation of the detail and combat of War Thunder as his game of choice, and shows it compared to flying an actual small-engine plane to demonstrate how well it does its job.

So what does War Thunder look like with all of the (ahem) trimmings? Prepare to be impressed after the break!

melissaheather I wish both were unburdened of their irritating progression grinds. :(

I wish War Thunder’s better features were combined with World of Warplanes’ better graphics.    That’d be a sweet game.

SuppliesATK Probably not in our lifetime :(
With racing games it’s easy: earn enough to buy a Miata then you can race for real and never need to play another racing game. With World War II dogfighting sims is more difficult though. At the very least it’ll be hard to find a buddy to be willing to get shot down for fun. Although, maybe it could work with those augmented reality glasses.

Looks cool, and I know I’d enjoy it, but man… that feeling when you pull up on the stick and push on the throttle, when the blood gets forced from your head and into your legs, the G-forces pushing you back into that polished metal seat and you start to feel small and helpless against both the sky and the machine you’re in… when can they replicate that? Cause that I would buy…

Qarran True, the rift is ideal for flight sims, but probably not so much for 3rd person or 2D games. I’ve seen videos of it with Arma 3. It looked fine until the guy lifted his gun to aim down the sights. Both eyes seemed to converge on the same point – in other words, he had the same monoscopic vision in both eyes.
