WildStar invites players to test a new tutorial and get a hoverboard for their efforts

If you’re a WildStar fan, you want a new hoverboard. There’s no point in saying otherwise because of course you want a new hoverboard. Everyone wants new hoverboards. And you can earn one by logging into the game’s public test realm and making some new characters. Really, that’s all it takes!

All right, you will actually have to play those new characters, but the point remains.

See, WildStar is putting out a new tutorial for new players based on all of the lessons learned since the game launched, and that means that it needs lots of people trying out the tutorials, seeing what (if anything) breaks, and so forth. The only way to do that is to get lots of people involved in the testing. Ideally, participants will test out the Exile and the Dominion tutorials each, but the designers would be happy just to have more live bodies in there and seeing what breaks. So jump in on April 6th to test the new experience and get yourself a sweet new hoverboard for your efforts when the improved tutorial releases.

Well….There was nothing wrong with the original tutorial/starting experience, I loved it.
Then they revamped it with the F2P launch, which pretty much butchered the immersion and wonder of it for the sake of getting through it quicker. But still did a fine job of introducing players.

The revamped tutorial is not needed at all. Why on earth did Carbine think they needed to devote resources on this? We’re people complaining en masse about the tutorial? Nope.

Why did I leave? Boredom mostly.

The tutorial (the first revamped one) was entertaining and short.

The starting planets were enjoyable enough. The humor was to my liking, the action and gameplay was enjoyable enough. The planet didnt feel like the original Swtor planets where you were just like “Omg, ive been here for almost 10 levels, stop giving me freaking side quests and just let me go to another planet already!”. About the time I was ready for a scenery change, I got it.

The next main planet started out fine (the one with those blue crystals that made you super jumpy near the start). Was fun to explore and the missions were pretty fun too. However, it started to borderline get to that “Ive been here too long, am I dont yet so I can move on with the main story and see another area?” situation. Im not an OCD completionist, but I dont typically pass up quests that I come across. Im sure I could speed run the areas, but then there is the fear of falling behind in both loot and level needed to progress.

So then we have the main city…. by the time I got the mission to go here, I found myself spending way too much time following excessively boring tour guide quests and run here, and run there type quests. NONE of that is fun. Design the city intuitively to allow players to discover and see where things are on their own, you shouldnt have to hold their hand so they learn…. but this STILL wasnt the breaking point….

The breaking point for me was the next tier of zones….where it felt like it was just side quest after side quest (boring ones at that), with no hope of ever getting past it all. I just lost all interest in progressing past it. On top of that, character progression (my skills and abilities) were reaching that “slowed down and dragged out” point where I wasnt really going to see my character capabilities change much. (since most of the changes would come from spending those points on each of the individual abilities, and most didnt really change until you had earned enough to do so). Simply put, my character started to feel more and more static, which only added to the boredom.

Ive read posts dating back to the games original release… and seeing common things like “boring leveling” and “the first 35 levels are an awful grind” and similar statements were things that often popped up under complaints and suggestions to improve upon. This is like the 3rd or 4th time they are revamping the tutorial process, but that only covers like the first 4 levels… if they want to keep players around, they should focus more on levels 5 – 35 it seems.

I dont really care how fun the end game is, if its a boring trip to the end game, i simply will cancel the trip. I quit FF14 for the same reasons…. however FF14 was a much worse offender.

OH…and if the devs are reading this, the “Bloom” post processing effect can die in a fire. The fact that you dont give an option to disable this makes me think you hate your players.

Line with more hugs DugFromTheEarth XP revamp mostly did just take out the side quests. But doing more than that would have taken a lot more effort and a complete redesign of all the early questing areas.

DugFromTheEarth Then why did you leave? I’m genuinely curious.  While the tutorial may not have been bad, it also didn’t do that good of a job selling Wildstar either. Could have been that you would have stayed on longer if there was a better tutorial.  (The game honestly gets better the further you go)

I do think that the levelling experience was the insidious killer for the game.
I was hopeful for the supposed big changes coming in time for the F2P, but it just shaved off side quests from the XP curve…

I think this is a great improvement! Hoverboard race as opener was the right choice :D

ColdinT Greaterdivinity Yea I think this revamp really does the start of this MMO justice. First thing you get to do is a mini hoverboard race which is the best intro to a new MMO ive experienced personally. Also showing off the housing options early is smart for those type of players.

Im one of those who left before hitting level 15

Just a hint…. it wasnt because the games tutorial was bad.
