Firefall may be heading to virtual reality

Could virtual reality take Firefall to the next frontier? Players are speculating madly following after seeing a Red 5 Studios job notice advertising for a VR gameplay programmer.

One of the descriptions of the position is to “prototype, design, and implement new virtual reality gameplay features” for Firefall. Red 5 is looking for a programmer that has familiarity with a virtual reality system (such as the Oculus Rift) and an “understanding of ‘presence.'”

Red 5 Senior Programmer Lutz did comment in the speculation thread on the obstacles of bringing any video game to virtual reality: “My guess is that big titles didn’t have enough time yet to adjust to VR. It’s tricky to get right since the control scheme is very different and there are subtle things that aren’t easy to get right. Another blocker is that the requirements for hardware are a lot higher. I would guess that only 1% of PCs would run big titles well on VR. If you fall below spec, you get dizzy easily because of frame rate jitter.”

There are a few game companies that seem to be entirely re-tooling their thought process towards VR.  I think this is a big moment for companies in that they are deciding their futures. Personally, I think the future is bright for VR.  I think it will change everything, although it’s going to take smaller, lighter, more clever visors with higher resolutions and refresh rates before it becomes as ubiquitous as owning a microwave or television.   But I think it’s going to happen.  CCP games understands.  Linden Lab understands.

MMOs for VR need to start simple.  Concentrate on best graphics you can, with simple but fun gameplay.  Use the VR space.  Use that sense of wonder people get.  Make them stop and smell the roses, because they are 3 dimensional and you have cleverly animated some butterflies around them that are fun to chase, or catch.  Little stuff like that will go a long way.   Make a quest such as finding a treasure chest a much more interesting thing (think of how The Secret World handles puzzle quests), so that finding a chest of gold is actually a rewarding event.  Make slaying just one goblin a heart-pounding experience.  All of this can be done by first considering the wonder of the VR space and filling smaller areas with more details, and rewarding exploration.  Exploration = more hours of gameplay.
And, it’s high time we went back to randomly spawning dungeons/maps/mazes, just like the original game Diablo.  That gives amazing replayability, when the map isn’t the same twice.

Interesting. If they can get most of the issues the game has fixed up before a VR launch, it might be just what the game needs. It already has a solid first person view built in so that should make transitioning to VR would work very well. I might keep track of this.
