Black Desert leaps to Steam today, launches the Striker class, and bans exploiters

It’s a huge day for Black Desert fans! Not only is the game launching on Steam later today (the splash page is up, just not downloadable yet), but the Striker class is also live in the west today, bringing the game’s class total up to 14.

Do note that pre-existing Black Desert accounts won’t natively work through Steam; it’s intended for brand-new players on new accounts rolled through Steam proper.

Over in Korea, the Striker’s been live for over a month already, but his Awakening has launched there today, so we can probably expect that in a month or two too.

Meanwhile, Kakao posted this morning that it’s taken action against players who were caught exploiting the game’s node and worker system, permanently banning the cheaters.

“After a thorough review of the logs we have removed all offending accounts from the game, permanently,” says the studio, eschewing a “wall of shame” and noting it can’t discuss the nitty-gritty of its investigation publicly. “While we do not enjoy this type of action, we will continue with all diligence to maintain the quality and fair environment you, the legitimate players of BDO, have helped us build.”

Update: Kakao has published its press release for the Steam launch, talking up the new servers, multiple launch events, and cash-shop sales.

“To better support the additional influx of players, Kakao Games will employ extra Olvia speed servers, some of which will be exclusively reserved to cater for new players that are coming through Steam. Users can choose to play on the exclusive servers or to jump into the greater community straight away. Special Olvia servers will help players to level-up quickly and catch up with the existing Black Desert Online community.”

As for the events:

Striker Level-Up Contest (5/24/2017 – 6/21/2017Players are challenged to take their Striker to the highest possible level. Players have up until the 21st of June (until weekly maintenance starts). Once the submission period is over, Kakao Games’ community team will select the top contenders for the best videos. After the top 10 contenders are selected, the Black Desert Online community will vote for the final winner. The top 10 videos will be awarded prizes as well as the top 50 most viewed videos on YouTube.

Going against my better judgement (not because I think it’s a bad game, but because I was pretty sure it wasn’t my style) I bought it on Steam and gave it a go.

It’s really beautiful, but sadly the action-packed combat just didn’t do anything for me. I realise I’ll be mostly alone in having that sentiment, but there’s no accounting for taste, I guess. :)

Bans didn’t even last a day, they were rolled back early this afternoon because of ‘too many false positives.’

I main a Ninja (just love that class) but decided to roll a striker so I can get the leveling rewards. All I can say at this point is its a hell of a lot tankier than the ninja by a fkin mile, the rotation also feels just like spamming the hell out of random buttons to get the job done when the method for Ninja is wayyyy more precise and thought out to get the absolute most out of it…especially grinding top tier mobs or pvp.

At the end of the day Striker is good, feels strong AF, the kids will love it for sure…but nothing in BDO will ever be as much fun as trolling gankers with my Ninja

The exploiters had hacks to get all the boss drops from NPC’s.

And they are still playing today and this was done months ago.

Just shows you how bad they are at catching cheaters or they just dont give a shit.

Metal Solvents can’t melt Titanium Ingots.

I guess this is good news for people who haven’t already installed the game… I will probably at least play around with character builder for the Striker model… see if I can make him look like Brad Pitt :)

If the Striker trailers are (partly) actual in-game footage, SWL’s “visceral action combat” will have a hard time coming anywhere near this (hardness comparable to diamond)

I highly doubt they would even expect to. Or expect anyone else to even dream they would.

They’re accurate to a point. For example the Awakening Trailer is actually the Ferrid cave and I believe that’s the group guild summoned boss for example. There’s plenty of actual footage out there on Youtube now, however, so you can judge for yourself. Personally I think the combat is very good all things considered and it makes going back to games like ESO or GW2 even like watching paint dry.

Apples and Oranges.

SWL in the end still is a hotkey MMO, just not tab targeted any more. The new combat is definitely an improvement, but the game didn’t suddenly transform into an ‘action’ game.

BDO’s combat is more akin to that of a brawler than a typical MMO imo. You rely too much on combos, animation cancels and positioning and for some this is a good thing, for others it’s simply impossible to grasp. It’s essentially a 3rd person beat-em-up set in a very fleshed out MMO world.

Does this game have a sub?

6 dollars for an mmo seems rather odd

Reader

It has an optional “Value Pack” that gives you some advantages for around $15 / mnth

Game has been perfectly playable for me with no sub. (I don’t PvP, though, so I can’t speak to how it is if you add that in.)

The $6 *might* be a mistake on Steam as it is only offered for that price as a gift package on the main BDO site. If it is a mistake and they catch it later, maybe get in on it now. ;)

But the Fish Bot is still allowed to run rampant……….

I don’t see it mentioned yet here, so…

Even if you are not interested in the Striker class, you might want to look at picking up a character slot. Not sure exactly how long it will be available.

“Players will be happy to know that an additional slot will be available for just one loyalty in the Loyalty Shop.”

Thanks for the reminder Tanek. Looking forward to getting the striker geared to +9 and to level 50. I don’t have many reasons to login these days so it’s nice when a new class or area is released.
