City of Titans shows off fan-made characters from New York Comic Con

This year, City of Titans creator Missing Worlds Media took its would-be City of Heroes successor super-hero MMO to New York Comic Con, where it allowed congoers to fiddle around with the character generator to whip up some fresh characters of their own. In a recent update, the devs shared a few of the creations in order to demonstrate some of the capabilities of the game’s character customization system. Featuring such renowned caped crusaders as Ryan Coolguy, Randomstar, and The Great Magnifico, the characters show off a few of the ways in which players will be able to make their characters stand out, as exemplified by Ryan Coolguy’s daring fashion choice of reptile-scale spaulders, a leather top, and garishly purple, latex tights, accented by a single boot.

The team also highlights the female body type options, as exemplified by the hero Randomstar. “We promised that female Titans would have more choices than just busty and extra busty,” the post says. “If you prefer a more realistic body shape, you can have it.” Although City of Titans’s character generator is still a work-in-progress, and though the version of the costume creator available at NYCC “didn’t have all of the final features enabled,” the fan-created heroes should give fans of what they can do with the game’s character customization. To check them out for yourself, you can head on over to the game’s official site.

On the whole not too shabby, some nice variety in textures and colours and options. The one shoe, bare foot character made me chuckle.

Although I do have a couple of minor critiques

I’m not sure what that shiny texture or material is folks were using but it gives the characters a plastic action figure look… not a choice i’d make it doesn’t look good its waaaay too shiny and artifical looking. It doesn’t come over as a gloss shiny, but as I say a plastic and overly shiny, shiny.

Also the model (base male and female) shape looks off proportionally, especially in the waist/pelvic areas. I do not know if this is the base model? or people making the character messing with dimensions and proportions to make them look oddly shaped? Either way it looks odd.

They have other options. MOP just showed the first character, leaving the rest for us to see by clicking on the link to the site.

Or following the @CityOfTitansMMO twitter account. They’ve been posting a series of “Make Anyone” pictures of characters that can be made that look well, … super.

No doubt they have other options, I looked on their site via the link before I posted my comment I looked at the selection of heroes on display.

The material being plastic and overly shiny looking isn’t necessarily something broken just an eyesore that doesn’t show favourably as a visual, the proportion too issue i suspect was just the players concerned making some oddly shaped heroes rather than the default form being off (although I havent seen the default forms so I couldn’t say for certain) as per usual :)

As I said they were only minor critiques, not OMG the world is endings lol

Well that looks terrible. Its like the pants are just the primary asset without any texture.

In exchange for giving players the power to choose their textures, you have to accept you won’t always like what they choose. But the power of choice is what is important.

I seem to recall a MOP column a few weeks ago about the columnist wishing MMOs could let players CHOOSE to make “ugly” characters.

Also, some people actually *like* the latex look.

…it’s very shiny though! O.o

It is. Keep in mind that like every texture, it’s available for almost anything in the Character Creator. I’m sure everyone can think of at least one place and time they’d like to use it.
