One of the biggest announcements out of BlizzCon 2018 for old-school RTS fans was certainly the news of Warcraft III: Reforged, a from-the-ground-up remake of Blizzard’s esteemed fantasy RTS title. Although players are no doubt looking forward to playing through remastered versions of the Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne campaigns, Reforged also aims to allow players to relive the glory days of Warcraft III’s modding community, as Blizzard aims to make all of the original game’s community-created maps and gamemodes playable in the remake.

It’s a monumental undertaking, to be sure, as the sheer breadth of community-created content for Warcraft III was staggering. In addition to now-well-known game modes such as Defense of the Ancients, which itself gave rise to the entire MOBA genre as we know it, the original Warcraft III was home to a smorgasbord of other custom maps and gametypes, all of which Blizzard hopes to support in Reforged. In addition, as Reforged will be running on the same engine as the original title, both communities will be able to play with one another, so even players who prefer the retro nostalgia of the original release will be able to benefit from the population boom that’s sure to come with Reforged’s release.
