Warcraft III: Reforged will support original’s custom games, allow crossplay between both versions

One of the biggest announcements out of BlizzCon 2018 for old-school RTS fans was certainly the news of Warcraft III: Reforged, a from-the-ground-up remake of Blizzard’s esteemed fantasy RTS title. Although players are no doubt looking forward to playing through remastered versions of the Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne campaigns, Reforged also aims to allow players to relive the glory days of Warcraft III’s modding community, as Blizzard aims to make all of the original game’s community-created maps and gamemodes playable in the remake.

It’s a monumental undertaking, to be sure, as the sheer breadth of community-created content for Warcraft III was staggering. In addition to now-well-known game modes such as Defense of the Ancients, which itself gave rise to the entire MOBA genre as we know it, the original Warcraft III was home to a smorgasbord of other custom maps and gametypes, all of which Blizzard hopes to support in Reforged. In addition, as Reforged will be running on the same engine as the original title, both communities will be able to play with one another, so even players who prefer the retro nostalgia of the original release will be able to benefit from the population boom that’s sure to come with Reforged’s release.

Oh hell yes. I so badly miss maps like Dark Deeds, Parasite, FF Epic RPG, Poke the Angry Ogre… Uther Party, the survival maps, the maze runners, the TDs, the AoSes, the other save/load RPGs…

So much good stuff came from WC3 custom maps which just wasn’t seen as much with SC2.

I like both Sci-Fi and Fantasy, but I like Fantasy more and I think Warcraft in general has more to offer for people with imagination than Starcraft in general. Warcraft’s universe is more varied and vibrant, it can be serious and it can be funny, Starcraft’s is just serious and on top of it, it’s limited to just three races.

Even before I could graps the concept of RTS games, I still liked Warcraft 3 (and even Age of Empires 2) over Starcraft.

Part of it is probably that yeah fantasy is a way more moddable setting typically but also WC3’s hero system was pretty well done and more easily moddable. In comparison SC2 did have a leveling system you could do and stuff, but map makers had to put more effort into making it closer to how WC3 did it.

Haven’t played Warcraft since forever. Actually looking forward to this. Since Age of Empires and Cossacks, RTS is one of my favorite genres.

Wouldn’t that just mean that reforged isn’t really adding anything new or even adjusting anything for QoL, just making it look pretty?

It sounds like they are making numerous updates to both the engine and editor, and in doing so are trying to make sure they don’t break anything in the process.

My bet is that the two versions will share the code, just like Starcraft Remastered and Starcraft, with a new patch for the original Warcraft 3 being released together with the Reforged launch and bringing a number of improvements and some QoL changes to both games.

They talked about it in the Blizzcon panel about the making of Reforged or whatnot. At the end of the day it sounds like they’re still using a lot of the engine tech etc., but essentially putting in significantly better models and molding animations to fit with how everything functions with the code.

Edit: here’s a timestamp of where they generally talk about it

“The engine itself is still rooted in the engine from 2001/2002. So the graphics are actually being added on top of the gameplay engine, the input engine, and all the different bits that allow you to experience Warcraft… and bring them forward into this sort of modern view that you see today.”

Is it wrong that i think the custom map/campaign tools for this is hands down the most exciting thing out of dudzzcon this year?

Nope, it’s what I’m most excited about as well. Blizzard heavily damaged their rep with their mapmaking community with what they tried to do with SC2 initially, but it sounds like they’ve learned from that and WC3 Reforged will hopefully revive that.

So the same as the SC remaster but this one comes with vastly improved models. Hot damn, when Blizzard is on it they’re on it. That’s rad as hell, and I hope it means we’ll keep using the “old” version of Battlenet complete with lobbies and shit.
