The Old Republic as a setting has tugged at fans’ hearts since the early ’90s. The interest in the ancient history of the Star Wars universe sprung from a simple line from Obi-Wan Kenobi in the first movie in 1977: “For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic… before the dark times, before the Empire.” Now, there is word from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy that we will finally see the Old Republic on screen.
In an interview with MTV News, Kennedy revealed that the Old Republic is something that Lucasfilm is working on. The interviewer asked about future projects for the studio and mentioned the Old Republic. Kennedy replied: “You know, we talk about that all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now, I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.”
Stories from the Old Republic began with comic books in the early ’90s with Tales of the Jedi and continued in the mid-2000s with the much-adored BioWare video game Knights of the Old Republic. Of course, now in the 2010s, we have the love-it-or-hate-it MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. Given this statement by Kennedy, the next decade will bring us an Old Republic movie or maybe a television series.
