The Daily Grind: Have you ever regretted buying something in an MMO?

I absolutely hate buyer’s regret. If I could go back and slap myself when I was about to press the “buy now” button on certain purchases, I absolutely would. For example, the other day I picked up a half-price copy of Stormblood about 24 hours before I came to the ultimate realization that I can’t stick with FFXIV for any length of time. That was wasted money.

I’m sure we all have stories like that, when we buy something for or in an MMO and then end up regretting the decision. Perhaps it’s an outfit that ends up being a complete stinker when you actually put it on your person, or some sort of vanity mount that you thought you had to have yet hardly end up using. Or even worse, when you buy something only to get the same thing or an equivalent for absolutely free soon thereafter!

Have you ever regretted buying something in an MMO? Sound off in today’s comments to get it off your chest and at least justify the purchase with an amusing tale!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

No. Generally if I am buying it is because I have stopped, thought it over, and decided that there is a reason. I don’t tend to do the vanity stuff, so I don’t regret the vanity stuff.

If I buy it, I don’t want to regret. :D

In Marvel Heroes. Then it got shut down in a really short notice.

A few years ago, got all the dlc expansions for LOTRO up to a point, and it cost many a pretty penny. But, not long after, I got bored with the game, and couldn’t bring myself to play it anymore. Didn’t even get as far as the expansions I bought before I quit.

Recently I checked out the game. Come to find out, they had a major change in publishers (or maybe just dev studio) and they’re as far as Mordor now. I’d have to buy a whole bunch more expansions to catch up. But, I’m leery of doing that, because who knows how much longer the game will be around and if I’d even enjoy playing it again.

You could take a look, and if you do like it buy at least some of the stuff with what you earn in game. Because all those expansions can be purchased that way too.

*LOTRO offers store points for achievements, basically. So you can play to get stuff.*

I was playing in a f2p “beta” of an MMO once, and they had an unexpected 50% off sale on two cash shop items which I felt would be extremely useful, so I dropped $90 on them immediately.

Two weeks later the game shut down permanently. Wish I had known about chargebacks back then.

I have so much buyers regret from “free to play” games I don’t know where to start. When you look back and think that you could own a pretty nice brand new car or even a small property for the amount you’ve spent on “free to play” games, most of which don’t even exist anymore, you have lots of regret. The worst part is I’m still sort of doing it. I cut the amounts in half about, but that’s not nearly enough. I can’t blame anyone other than myself, I clearly have issues.

I don’t think 20 years of online gaming purchases would ever equal a new car or a piece of property for me.

Anything purchased in Star Trek Online. The removal of the User Generated Content tool has made the game just a standard , not very innovative MMO. User Generated content set them apart and made the studio unique in it’s offerings. Removing it means I (1) will no longer spend cash in their games , as they are just standard MMOs now. AND (2) regret ever spending money supporting the studio.
Cryptic Devs are great people honestly, but decisions of removing content again and again leave a terrible feeling as a customer.

So much this. I have stopped playing it and uninstalled it. It was a core feature of the game from the start.

Much of the content players created was infinitely better then what the devs did.

Avid Marvel Heroes PC player for all 3 1/2 years of it’s existence and a beta/founder player for MHO on PS4. Biggest regret of my gaming life so far. Burned me so much I’m hesitant on paying for anything “Online only” now. It only takes 1 bad apple. Game didn’t deserve to be online only, could’ve just been like diablo 2 where it was offline, had an online server, and let you use your single player save(s) for tcp/ip connection. We’d still be able to play it to this day.

This has happened enough times that I hope I will eventually learn from it. I feel my wallet is far tighter today but maybe not tight enough. My guild is still my weakness.

I’ve regretted buying certain MMO’s does that count? lol

Seriously though there has been a few occasions where although I do not regret buying the items I bought I regretted my timing as 24 hours later said items went on sale grr… but beyond that not really as I only buy what I want I don’t impulse buy.

Anthem. I don’t know if it counts or not.
