Elder Scrolls Online players can slay fictional dragons to save literal cats in a unique charity event

The Elsewyr chapter of The Elder Scrolls Online has been all about saving the cat-like Khajiit from the dragon threat. Now, players can slay those same dragons to help actual cats in the real world (along with other animals in need) with the Slay Dragons Save Cats initiative.

From now until Monday, December 9th, Zenimax Online Studios will donate $1 for every five dragons slain in-game up to a total of $200,000 to the Best Friends Animal Society in North America and FOUR PAWS International in greater Europe. The donation will be split evenly between the two organizations.

In order to facilitate this charity drive, a number of in-game events will be kicking off over the next several weeks, starting with the Dragon Rise even on October 3rd and including the Dawn of the Dragonguard event on November 26th, both of which involve slaying dragons that will be added to the donation charity. A number of other events are coming back through the rest of 2019 as well, including the Witches Festival, the New Life Festival, and the Undaunted Celebration. Naturally, all of these events will feature goodies for players to earn like pets, cosmetic outfits, and furnishings.

Players can learn more about this unique bit of philanthropy through the dedicated web page, including timing for events, information on the two charities being benefited, and even where to donate directly if you’re so moved. Now get out there and save some cats!

If the cats need a lawyer, to help with the transfer of funds, they might want to call Leon

Great idea for a charity initiative. Thank you, Zenimax!

I’m not sure I believe that cat ever passed the bar exam…..

That’s part of why the article amused me so much. The cat was “hired”, and made a “lawyer” by the effective equivalent of Brazil’s Bar Association. Who’s gonna tell them no? :-)

Cheers,

You’re not sure, but you don’t really know :P

Oh wow that’s so cool. I had to make sure it was real, being that the link was to Funny or Die, but it actually is real! It’s so nice, it made me tear up a bit.

“The employees decided to unofficially adopt Leon, and let him hang out around the OAB lobby and reception area. Unfortunately some people started to complain”

I have some choice thoughts and words for the people who started to complain. Though I calm down a bit reading the quote from another article:

“Today, he is very dear to everyone. Even those didn’t like him got used to his presence and have fun with him.”

More of a Dog person myself, but anything for the animals and kudos to them for having a sweepstake that includes SO many countries, you don’t see that often. Now to kill some Dragons (aww I kind of like Dragons lol).

Wow. Usually this kind of thing from most games is “Buy in-game mounts from us and we’ll donate half of the profits of the purchase to charity” or something. This one is just playing the game killing dragons and they’ll give money to charities.

Not to put down the half profit stuff, those things have given a lot of money to charities as well. Just I’m not used to seeing something that’s simply play the game killing certain monsters and they’ll donate to charity :D

It’s funny how they tied it to Elsweyr as well. Though it’s saving just as many dogs as cats :D

There’s a fair bit of grousing on the forums about this requiring the Elsweyr expansion, but that’s mostly just the typical entitled gamer crap.

Aww but they’re doing such a cool thing. Well of course it needs Elsweyr, that’s where the dragons and cats are.

It’s a fairly popular expansion and if it helps I’m sure we will hit the donation limit anyway. I guess I understand those people want to be able to help it get there too though even if they don’t have the expansion.

It’s a long event though, going until December 9th, that would be too long to give people Elsweyr for free. They could always add some normal world boss somewhere into the event I guess that is somehow related to either Dragons or Khajiit (or even dogs since the donation benefits them just as much).

I bought Summerset a few hours after the deadline for getting the free house and I was hoping they’d overrule the deadline for me and let me get the free house anyway since it was so close to the time hehe :D They didn’t. I mean I do sort of still wish they let me have it and all since the timing was so close (quite literally within a few hours), but I lived with the decision that they weren’t going to give it to me and didn’t complain.

Sometimes we just can’t take part in everything. I’m sure there are people who don’t own ESO at all who want to take part without having to buy ESO as well.

Anyway, we already kill a lot of dragons in the game and this is just going to ramp a lot of people up to kill much more than usual. There are always multiple instances from the people there. Hopefully, they will keep us updated with how many we’ve killed and how many more we need so we can be sure we’re hitting that limit but I’m pretty sure we will.
