Wurm Online shows off its graphical overhaul work

Things in Wurm Online are getting a whole lot prettier soon. The devs have posted a variety of looks at the sandbox’s graphical overhaul. The update to the visuals mostly focuses on volumetric lighting, which is already improving the game’s atmosphere as well as bringing some new beauty to the day and night skies of the title.

There’s also been an update to long-distance Z-fighting, which is what causes textures on the same level to flicker due to the client not knowing how to display them correctly. The post offers an animated before and after look at what these improved Z-fighters do, but in summary it stops distant water surfaces from fluttering like a flag in a hurricane.

We’ve put together a gallery of Wurm Online’s visual updates below to help players let the sunshine in.

I’m curious when it launches on Steam? There will be a new server from Steam where everyone starts fresh. Another thing is when I tried playing the Non-Steam version, the game would not accept my account and password, despite I typed them in correctly, it would say they are wrong.

So I’m hoping I will finally be able to play it when it launches on Steam.

I’ve been testing the new volumetric lighting out on the test server today. It makes a world of difference! Here are a couple of shots I took:

Screenshots look like from any generic MMORPG from early 2000’s. Not sure what improvements were there but they do not seem impressive. Of course not everyone will care about graphics so for many people it doesn’t matter.

Compared to how the game looked before, it actually looks a lot better. It still doesn’t look that good, but it’s old and from a very small studio so eh.

Wurm will be turning 15 years next year and the size of the dev team can literally be counted on two hands. So yes, visually, this game is never going to be able to compete with huge MMO titles that have large development teams. But where Wurm lacks in visuals, it makes up ten-fold in depth, freedom and possibilities. It’s the only MMO that has continued to hold my interest after many years of playing it!

Hey there Kat, will you be streaming the test server any time soon?

Since anyone can go to the test server, I would imagine it should be ok to show it a little bit on stream, but I’ll have to check with the team first.
