Camelot Unchained works on giants, pretty trees, wyverns, and replacing Ben Pielstick

It’s another week of Camelot Unchained updates with another Top Ten-ish and look at artwork — followers know the drill by now. In this update, the devs discuss working on a new giant race that’s slowly starting to come together, adding the viking keep plot crafted by the Builder’s Brigade to the battleground zone, and introducing faction-themed wyverns. Meanwhile, the art section has a look at several new armors, in-game barricade renders, and some pretty new trees that City State hopes will improve the game’s overall sky line.

Before all of that, however, the post takes a moment to well-wish Ben Pielstick, who announced in the game’s latest newsletter that he will “relocate to somewhere outside of the country where COVID-19 is much less of a concern.” Taking his place is Chris Junior, who readers will recall was one of four new arrivals to CSE as part of some staff changes in July.

Finally, there’s another stream from Mark Jacobs where at one point he has to explain why his visit to the office to get a couple of things didn’t end up with him processing refunds. It’s a bit of an unhappy watch, if we’re honest, as Jacobs is once more assailed by some familiar trolls and remarks, but it also should be added to the record.

I can tell by the reading of the comments below that the fanbase this game once had is gone. sure it has a few strays that wanna see it go somewhere…usually its considered distasteful for the game company to reply on negative opinions on a game…no matter how bad, specially in an aggressive manner that iv seen here. It really shows defeat. but i guess this games so far down the drain now with misplaced trust, refunds that never went through…and 90 day plans that sound almost exactly the same every time…all you can do is try and hold it above the pit as long as you can. everyday i log onto MOP. the first thing i do is look for a CU post so i can read these. its the best entertainment reading iv seen in a long time.

Warhammer was the greatest summer I ever had playing a game. I will always remember someone for their accomplishments over their failures.

Mark, i love you man, but…

When is CU launching?

Reader
Mark Jacobs

Right back at you BB, even when we disagree with each other.

A lot depends on what happens over this 90-day plan. We have a number of core items that need to be in place during this time and if we does, we’ll be in good shape since that list includes things like 24×7 servers, Dragons’ Web, another class trio, etc. I know it doesn’t sound like much but the fact that we’re trying to pull in some Extender Pack items should be see as a good sign.

There is a disturbing amout of posts in this thread that seem to be done by people whose negative obsession is closing to stalker-like level – in my view.

Reader
Bruno Brito

I mean, other than Oleg, most people invested in CU reacted badly to the announcement of the other game, but they are in their right.

They paid money for the game, backed it’s original vision, and yet, he led them astray by showing them the money was going into another game.

Yeah, stalking behavior is inexcusable, but saying the people here being frustrated equates them being obsessed is downright offensive. You’re not respecting their hard-earned cash.

Reader
rk70534

I have severe doubts about whether many of the most vocal people here ever took part in crowdfunding the game.

People who think they have been led astray and have lost money, and are angry and disappointed as a result, tend to stand out from people who committed nothing personally, but to whom trolling people and companies in the business is in essence a hobby.

I see mainly the latter in this thread, have seen what appear as solid cases of the former in some other CU threads here.

An angry, disappointed person who thinks they have been done a wrong, and a stalking troll who gets joy from hounding people tend to post very different kind of messages. Look at the vocal posts in this thread – do most of them seem as coming from the latter?

Not to me.

That is not to say that CU hasn’t had and doesn’t have problems, but silencing trolls also helps to bring out the voice of people who have solid cases to make. Now they are lost in the flood of messages from trolls.

Reader
Mark Jacobs

BB, one thing that you say that isn’t true (depending on how you meant it) is the whole “by showing them the money was going into another game” because that wasn’t true. The investors put in all the money that was needed for FS:R & CU starting last July. No money was taken from the PayPal account to pay for FS:R when we made the announcement, not one dollar. As you know, the money take we received for CU funding ran out years ago which is why I and the investors put in money and then we got some additional funding to expand the team so we could do both games. And since CU changes and improvements have greatly outnumbered FS:R changes since February, I think it is safe to say that we’re still spending on CU. :)

I get people being angry but some of the lies that were spread, the stalking, and the threats that ensued were unjustified precisely because we were and continue to work on CU and expand the team. If we had shut down CU development, I’d understand that level of anger but we have done the exact opposite and hopefully will be adding even more developers in the coming weeks. This does not the fit the narrative that some people have been pushing, whenever they get the chance.

It’s a scam – all of it (Hell, they even took money to make another game NO ONE who funded the original asked for…) ;)

Also – LOVE that they’re giving such speedy refunds on request (a policy announced by Mark Jacobs himself)…oh, wait…

At this point, I still have faith in the game.

But it is the bare minimum $35 amount of faith I put in the game. I’m glad that I didn’t put more than that sum of money.

3 Kickstarted games – Crowfall, Star Citizen, CU … still no game.

Reader

Crowfall is one good surprise from those mentioned ^^ It came out to Beta Phase in Steam earlier this summer if not mistaken.. :) SC had very nice & welcome 3.10 update early this month <3 Still SC in it's current state is very disappointing knowing that still to this day after 7'ish years of development there's only 1x explorable Star System & what makes it even more saddening is the fact that SC has big Dev crew & that massive crowdfunding available.

Walking animation in SQ42’s trailer looked Horrible b when it was released hmm was it autumn last year & PU (Mmo) still w only 1x eplorable S.System in Q4 fake 2020 :( Some SC’s White Knights saying that once Cloud Imperium Games crew gets next phase (whatever they called it) done at early next year then adding S.Systems is easier & comes out w faster rate. I hope that’s true & happens without glitches & delays. Also is sad to know that only recently CIG put out a vid about upcoming wildlife design https://youtu.be/Dqb8DQpNHiM on that vid’s comments ‘Biking Without Borders’ replied well to good comment written by ‘David R.B.’ .. I hope the same.. Those concept imgs they show on the vid look nice & excited to see their finished models.

Once there’s Wildlife roaming on all explorable planets & their spawn locations are random on each visit then i’ll support SC with buying Starter Package that costs €50. Things like that should’ve been there already at least two years. Can imagine how much more fun ppl would’ve had w random encounters while they go to do mining & just roam around. There are many crowdfunded & non crowdfunded games out there that had wildlife even when product wasn’t finished :)

CIG is doing things in weird order & have focused too much into ships advertisment. Y y marketing crew is always diff. than content creators, but still.. :P So i defended SC, but also Rant about it’s bad early development planning.. Wish you good path ahead & enjoy gaming o/ – Fedaygin –

How people can get so worked up over a game is beyond me. I rather support an independent developer doing a passion project than buying into the same fast-food games over and over again.

people can get so worked up over a game

It is not about game, my friend. It is about how a person behaves. If a person behaves in a dishonest and incompetent way – people will absolutely call that person out and criticize the company that this person owns.

For example, take a look at the upvote to downvote ratio of latest video on official Ashes of Creation YouTube channel. Then take a look at general mood of comments for that video on YouTube. It is also a game, yet people are being more positive towards it, much more than towards Camelot Unchained. Can you guess why? I’ll give you a hint: observe the behavior of a person who is responsible for developing Ashes of Creation game. Listen to what he says, how he says it, and where he says it (he is not afraid to comment on Reddit or even answer questions and discuss games with popular streamers on Twitch). And if a person who is leading Ashes of Creation development would be leading Camelot Unchained – most people would also be positive towards the Camelot Unchained.

I rather support an independent developer

You can support whomever you want to, even Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin, it doesn’t matter to any other person who has plenty of reasons to dislike them.

Do you think I didn’t read the comment section or do you want to stuff me with your arguments ad nauseam? Your comment is exactly the point, why do you get so worked up over it(and no, I’m not asking you to repeat your arguments again, the question is purely rhetorical). We have much, much bigger problems, right now and always had and always will than a couple of bucks and a couple of pixels.

Growing tired of reading the same overly long winded trolling from a couple posters here that have started showing up in recent months. While I’m not exactly happy with what’s been going on with CU I’m still finding patience at this point to see what happens in the future.

You are always welcome to ignore the facts if they are inconvenient to you. Sadly the comments system on this site does not allow people to hide the posts containing inconvenient truth, but you can at the very least ignore the whole “comments” section for every article related to this game. Or just post on Reddit where you can ignore users who post inconvenient truth if you desire, so that you will never be able to see their comments, even accidentally. Or on official forums, they also have “ignore” function which works well, same goes for official Discord. I am an active participant in all of those places, if you have any question or need a help about how to use “ignore” function – you are welcome to ask in those places and I will gladly help any new member with any questions like these.

What a total crock of sh*t. Mark Jacobs outright lying and manipulating his community now which is pretty much a continuation since FSR debacle. Where the investors clearly got a lot more for the first 7.5m right as mark said for years after KS “we will have enough money to finish game from KS money” to after the 7.5m first time “we have plenty now all is well till final product” to last FSR announcement “we need to make another game to finish and get revenue for CU”. The whole reason and speeches we got at KS are moot now about not wanting to be dictated by big corporations like EA or investors but that’s clearly the case now.

The whole narrative being painted by mark is nonsense surrounding Ben Pielstick and covid19, it’s just being used as two birds one stone PR softening. To backup the whole “scary corona i can’t go to the studio and do refunds” yet totally caught himself out on stream if he was that so worried he wouldn’t of left his home to go into studio ever, plus he had plenty of time to clean his coffee mug by his own accounts. The Second part is to avoid questions why the main lead designer who did most of the BSC days and theory for 7 years is deciding to leave before the game is even remotely started still in basic prototype for first systems which then had to be redone endless times like the ability system. Which was in fact used as an excuse for a 2 year delay while they did all manner of other things like art and animations then even after this they had to go back to the ability system multiple times and it’s still a potato.

Ben going to Finland hes clearly got a job at CCP on eve if you put 2 and 2 together, getting out of US with corona is just a nice byproduct and excuse for quiet all good sweep under carpet don’t look here.. not the reason clearly no one believes that not now people see through the spin of last few years. Ship”pun” seems to be really sinking with multiple long term senior engineers leaving their team in short period. Checking linkedin they have not managed to balance the engineers of senior likes to what has left with junior and artists, also many of the hires are Seattle now so there is the whole remote backlog issues they have suffered with and used saying it was not a problem before.. but now with corona I’m sure that will be a great big problem in laying the ground work for the ultimate covid really hurt us and doubtful seeing a actual game.

The game is hardly being worked on for CU over the last 8 month to a year when hearing from people close to game so little progress while FSR moves forward slowly. We clearly know the focus now cause of investors being down the neck of Mark. Ultimately leading us all to have give cash for a engine prototype and building of asset profile and CUBE for sale. After all who doesn’t love getting over 100 emails in CU’s history about tree and art updates without actually ending up in game.

The ego and outright misreading and understanding or just not giving a crap about your community is evident now especially after FSR announcement. Where Mark actually expected people waiting nearly 7 years for a game they backed would be excited that they decided to not tell people they started working on another game before finishing the first for half a year.. This from the same person who took endless potshots in newsletters, massively posts here or streams with moral high ground standards aimed at Star Citizen, Crowfall and Ashes of Creation and their models of more money, selling tshirts and general smugness. Firmly just put his own company into the same questionable ethics and egg on his face at same time. It just feels like a string of manipulation PR over the last few years, latest with the spin of “new hires” while bringing in 4 but losing now 7?. But as from marks mouth on anything bad “it’s all good up to speed no problem” yet in past using the same excuse that it will take awhile to get upto speed when it suits the other way.. just fine changing the lead designer after 7 years in 2 month and a whole new ideology and ideas from new designer will be just fine.

As i said on reddit i would refund if you have anything of worth in CU cause if the game ever comes and that’s a big if at this point. Plus refunds is doubtful cause money is clearly a struggle for them now and refunds will be coming right from the investors pocket, no doubt for this whole ruse and impossible to refund trying to wait it all out and hopefully people will forget or wont want a refund. Which is evident of old people who have refunded where mark pleads from them to see the next new video and makes them jump through hoops to get refunds to stem the tide. The game if ever is going to be a total shell and very different to what was promised in KS and BSC day idear’s.

Just remember it wont be any of the excuses including corona(which will be used soon) it will be years of poor leadership from ego and control freakary you can look back and see the pattern with community managers who still don’t even do their job as the frontman cause Mark wants to do everything. This even after taking years of crap and being a exposed nerve and taking things so personal is such an ugly look for the president of studio, had a full on meltdown on stream other night when caught out by dinarian on refunds and going into studio and some other ponzi troll. To then having a writer hired on a stretch goal in Max who was demoted to morning stream, boardgame maker and Newsletter spellchecker who wrote practically no lore in years while at studio and that was his only real job(not that he didn’t want to according to a stream he did with unchained cast) because Mark wanted to write it all then max to check it after only.. Which i found very interesting, especially when you couple this together with Mark in multiple Q&A streams back then saying he had time to write full novels for his kids book and other side projects and still no CU lore in forever. To then more of the same with refunds how he must be the only person who can do it. You can only imagine why design was held up and still in theory for years even now unknown on some mechanics which probably wont end up anything like put out years ago, working along side Mark as Ben in co-lead designer must of been a nightmare.

Reader
Mark Jacobs

So many lies in your post, nicely done! And I’m not lying about anything. I’ve try to answer every question I’m asked at least once a stream. Some people don’t like the answers but that’s not the same thing as lying.

This should be interesting, so what are the lies there?. This from the master of delusion and half truth spin who still says things like “The game is coming quicker than most people expected” said actually believing this wholehearted after 7 years behind. You also carefully forgot to celebrate or mention the first and second year in beta.

Mr contradiction now with such lack of trust from his own community. No wonder you decided to make new rules where questioning anything bad about development time or refunds is worth a moderation actions on forum. Fits into your tyrannical megalomaniac echo chamber you created.

Such brave words, hurled behind the shield of anonymity as usual. At least I (and some others) have the courage of my convictions and say what I need to say without a “jolly pirate nickname” or CM to deliver to message or something else. C’mon Mr. Mystery guest, if you are going to libel me, at least do so with your real name.

And in terms of lies in your first post, start with how you insult Max by saying he was demoted. Max was given more responsibility and acted as lead designer on the board game in addition to his other responsibilities. He was never demoted and, quite to the contrary, encouraged in his writing and other talents.

And in terms of the Forums and refunds. I asked people to post in one refund thread so I can respond there, as I have in the last few days, as opposed to lots of separate threads or, as some people were doing, derailing other threads. And anybody who’s on the Forums can attest to that. Just keep it polite there, like on other places in the Forums, and people have had and can have their say there.

And I can go on and on but I have better things to do, like make a couple of games.

Who needs a progression system when look at all these updated trees.

Videos of actual combat? Videos of progression? Videos of crafting or even gathering? Show me something.. 7+ years with nothing to show for.

While Ashes of Creation is leasing a engine, even in a quarter of development (3 years?)it smokes CU in comparison, they have a actual playable alpha server that can stay up. There’s gathering, crafting, diplomacy,mounts,city/town build, node progression, dungeons, raids, world events. And yes “more money..leased engine” but shouldn’t a dev team that’s got 4+ years ahead have something along that lines?

There’s no comparison, AOC is 50% farther along then CU ever was or has been..pre-linuxification.. pre-reABILITATION. Ive been skeptic for about 2 years now, FSR is what really tipped me and once i saw Ben left pretty much emptied the tank of any faith i had left. Ben was a vital part of that team

I remember the BatShitCrazy days, when everyone was full of excitement for the true next-gen DAoC…

Reader

Let it die MJ….you sucked the entire fanbase of any hype soon as you announced Ragnarok. (When we all know you did that to get another loan and some more devs..try to save CU when one last hail mary)

I had a ton of stuff typed up but it’s nothing new and it’s already been said by everyone else everytime a new CU post goes up. I was so hyped and defended the game for years until the Ragnarok incident, then i knew we were being played.

8 years…a pre-alpha type of product with no gameplay loop. Bunch of gimmick talk about 1000’s of bots but MJ you have completely gutted this fanbase of any hype. On the bright side your art team is 10/10 but why are you worried about things like golem growth when there’s not even a progression system.

This game is 3 years at least to being something playable. So much faith and it’s all gone..

Reader

So much BS from you BB, as always. Such as “…I was so hyped and defended the game for years until the Ragnarok incident”

Camelot Unchained teases ‘epic siege battles’ as beta development continues

or

Camelot Unchained brings back its newsletter, updates character art

etc., etc., etc.

C’mon BB, at least try and be honest. You’ve been yelling at me for years and I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time you’ve tried to say how big of a defender you until something happened and then I search MOP and find the earlier ones.
