Champions Online celebrates 11th birthday with costume gender-swapping
With multiple in-development superhero MMOs offering up their character and costume creation tools for players this summer, it’s the perfect time for Champions Online to step up with something pretty big, and today, it has done just that: The Cryptic MMO has essentially made it possible for players to swap their costumes to use any gender’s body. In other words, if you want one costume that makes you look like a green catgirl, and another that makes you look like an orange robotdude, well, now you can do that and switch between them at will.

“Champions, you shouldn’t be limited by the constraints of society, or a character creation system. We want you to create exactly the type of hero you want, whether it’s your permanent look or just for a costume contest. That’s why we’re making a change to the tailor in game – you’ll be able to swap from the “male” body type to the “female,” and vice versa! This change will work like any other costume on your character – if you’d like some of your character’s looks to use one body type, and others to use the other, you can. You’ll notice a new button in the tailor that will give you the option to switch, and any costume pieces that don’t have a counterpart for the other body type will simply be removed. This is not a permanent change – you can switch a costume back at any time. And it’s completely free!”

The news comes just as Champions Online is celebrating its 11th birthday (yes 11th). The first leg of events began today at 11 a.m. EDT and includes a new mission from Top Ten, the Save the Cats event, and Sapphire’s concert.

Okay so… this is cool…

It was really cool when City of Heroes did it in 2009, too.

I didn’t want to be the first one to point out that it took them 11 years to do what City of Heroes did in five… and was there as an example since about CO’s launch. I guess it was just waaaaay down the list of things the devs thought were important or desirable.

Time to save some cats from trees…and Sapphire’s “singing”.

11 years so cool and their bashes are always fun and full of players.

That’s pretty legit, I like this. I’ve actually been thinking of downloading it again for shits and giggles while I wait on the new crop to come out. Haven’t played a superhero MMO in quite a while.

I’m actually surprised to see CO still getting periodic updates, it felt like it was abandoned for so long. Then came the new team to work on new content, then they disappeared, but there seem to be some small QoL focused updates and minor content additions nowadays, which is pretty cool. Especially considering Cryptic is now working on 3 live MMO’s and in heavy development on a fourth. That’s a lot to juggle.

I feel like the game really need more meaty content but it’s not a bad game by any means. Would be nice for it to have a villain side.

If you have experience with it, would you say it has enough content to warrant a (basically) new player checking it out? I did play it back when it still had a subscription but never got past the early beginning portion

Yes. The character creation is good, the questing is nothing to write home about but it’s passable. The adventures are cool.

Tired: Marvel and DC clones
Wired: Ranma ½ clones.

So, Male, Female and Panda then? ;)

That’s actually pretty fun.
