The Daily Grind: What is your favorite MMO for pure grinding?

I have a few MMOs that I go to when I want traditional questing or dungeon hopping, but when I’m in the mood for the simplicity of pure grinding — or mob farming, if you will — I boot up WoW Classic and go to town.

I know it sounds so basic and even dull, but there’s something really calming and appealing about grinding out mobs for experience, gold, and loot. I like challenging myself to see how many mobs I can pull or how much money I can make in a night. Since WoW Classic’s quests really aren’t that great, I don’t feel like I’m missing that much by eschewing them and staking out a farming spot for the evening.

Do you have a favorite MMO for pure grinding? What game fills that niche in your life, if at all?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Hmm. I don’t know. I mean, there is probably more than one fave. It really depends on what is happening in my life. Heh.

Not too long ago it was Blade and Soul for me. I would get home from a tough day at work and the combat and story were a perfect way for me to unwind. I didn’t have to think to much about it. I knew what I needed to do to progress and I would do it. The grind was relaxing, if you can believe it.

Go back a few years and it was SWTOR. But that was a different situation. I was the GM of what was at one point a fairly large guild. And there was a lot of grind in my responsibilities to the guild. So, it was another job so to speak but I was happy to do it.

Now, going back several years to the original launch of Ultima Online, the grind was just pure fun. Ultima Online brought me into the MMO fold, so to speak, and I never considered grind as gind. I was a student and had plenty of time to play to be honest.

I hate grinding, so whichever one that let’s me just focus on the story and exploration. Best thing about ESO was that enemies scaled to my level, so I didn’t have to grind just to travel to new areas.

Oldschool FFXI. It was a fun experience grouping up with 5 other people sparking conversations while leveling a massive list of interesting and diverse classes.

WoW Classic “is” my go to for just relaxing and slowing down to grind. Though really it doesn’t feel like a grind it just feels relaxing.
