Some balls are held for charity and some for fancy dress, but the ball being held in Hearthstone’s Scholomace Academy is the one we’ll be talking about. Starting today, the Masquerade Ball event is beginning, bringing some Halloween-themed fun and a few wrinkles to the game modes of the online CCG.

Starting today, players will be able to recruit and utilize Elementals in Battlegrounds mode, including 16 new Minions and four new Heroes. In addition, a new ranking system is being introduced that’s similar to the progression system in constructed Ranked mode. This also means, however, that everyone’s Battlegrounds ratings will be reset. Finally, the Dual-Class Arena and the Rise of the Zombeasts Tavern Brawl both make a return.

Starting on October 7th, the titular Masquerade Ball arrives to the Tavern Brawl, which automatically adds two more mana to the cost of every minion summoned, but when the originally summoned minion is defeated, its original takes its place. Because it’s wearing a mask and the mask is broken. Get it?

From there, the game will introduce Rexxar and his single-player missions on October 13th, while October 14th will introduce a Tavern Brawl that lets players play as several bosses in a Boss Battle Royale. On top of all of these little events, there are also legendary quests that can net as many as nine card packs and a secret quest that tasks players with following clues to find two golden copies of the Transfer Student card. It all kicks off starting today, with salient details available in the patch notes.
