There is an assumption, for some reason, that most people who work as game journalists are pretty bad at playing video games. I don’t know where this comes from. Certainly I’ve known some people in this field who are not very good at games in general, but it’s hardly universal, and I myself know that I am generally pretty good at video games. But I don’t know if I’m actually very good in World of Warcraft; it’s been a very long time since I’ve been in top-end content there, and while I definitely put in the effort I may be mediocre or outright bad at this point.
Of course, this doesn’t mean I’m necessarily bad at the game, either; I’ve seen plenty of people who seem to believe that the key to playing is smacking their faces into their keyboards and whatever happens next will sort itself out, and they think they’re great players. So today, I turn the question over to you, dear readers. Do you consider yourself a good player in your MMO of choice, or are you assuming you are mediocre at best?
