The Daily Grind: Should double-jump be an MMO standard feature?

Sorry, guy.

I don’t care if it’s not realistic, I love double-jumping. Ever since the days of Metroid, getting that sweet extra air time made me actually enjoy platforming elements. Double-jumping didn’t just allow me to get to spots that were previously inaccessible, they helped to compensate for my frequent bad jumps.

This is why I adored WildStar, which baked double-jumping in as a standard feature and never apologized for it. Even running from point A to B was made more fun for it, because I could entertain myself with a stylish mid-air hop.

Should double-jumping be a standard feature in MMOs — or at least far more common than it is? What games could benefit from it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Not if it means jumping puzzles.

And you know it inevitably will, because content design teams are predictable – give them a mechanic, they’ll build quests around it. After years of work and hundreds of fetch/kill quests, they’re as starved for fresh approaches as players are.

Hell no!

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy a good double-jump system and a good bit of platforming, but it’s a system that has nothing to do with roleplaying and has no basis in reality, so I’d hate to see it become a standard in MMORPGs.

I don’t mind it. It can definitely add another dimension to jumping puzzles which many people like, to make them more challenging. Not sure why other people are complaining about it – it’s irrational to assume that double jumping “does not fit” into some setting unless that setting is based on real life events or the game is based on the lore which explicitly mentions that “double jumping does not exist” and it’s extremely selfish and also irrational for people to say that double jumping should not exist simply because they personally don’t like it.

I don’t know if double-jumping needs to be standard, but I think I would appreciate a more useful jump in most games. We can get over the knee-high walls, but just barely. I think on a different note, with as many complaining down below about their hatred of jumping puzzles, I’d really like to see maybe like DDO, a larger use of say ladders or other kinds of vertical traversal. Maybe even a grappling hook. Not as ridiculous as most games make it, less like a crazy Bionic Commando swinging simulator and more like a… portable ladder. Maybe some climbing hooks. I dunno, I get tired of having to walk around a cliff that’s barely taller than my character.

All games should have Death Stranding’s traversal options, and I’m not joking!

I hate jumping puzzles, I am irritated by hyperactive jumpers in games…but you know what? Double jumping in SOLO is a thing of beauty and joy. Movement is just SO much fun. So I guess as long as it’s done well and isn’t tied to a platform/puzzle type mechanic I’m good with it.

Double jumping with a “woo hoo” at the top. Only select individuals will understand the reference.

Yo dawg, I heard you like to jump while you’re jumping.

I didn’t really play Wildstar and not sure specifically what double-jumping is, but over on Fallout 76 when I got the Marsupial mutation, I didn’t look back! OMG it’s fun running around, jumping up high out of mob reach while fighting, leaping up on top of buildings and climbing mountains. It makes me ridiculously happy playing like this and I wish I could do similar things in other MMOs I play.

I don’t play many tab-target MMOs, and when I do it’s usually the kind like City of Heroes, Warframe or PSO2 that allows me the freedom of movement and action in a big world that I really enjoy. So, yes, double jumping is usually pretty fun when it fits in the setting.

Heck yeah. Jumping is fun. Even better if there are shortcuts and secret places that we can get to by making good use of jumping.

And yeah, I enjoy jumping puzzles in MMOs. I’ve been playing, and enjoying, platforming games since the Atari days, and I tend to enjoy platforming sections in any game that has them.
