The Daily Grind: What’s the worst city in an MMORPG?

A while back on the MassivelyOP Podcast, I boldly declared that New Kaineng has surpassed Divinity’s Reach and Dalaran as the greatest cities ever built for an MMORPG. I stand by this opinion!

But what about the worst cities? That’s much harder. When I go back through my brain’s archive of MMO cities I had terrible times in, I am pleased to say that most of them are in very old games, so perhaps newer MMORPGs have learned their lesson. The ones that spring to mind first and most quickly are both from EverQuest: Kelethin, the wood elf tree city that is genre-famous for killing thousands of newbies who inadvertently fell to their deaths, and Neriak, which actually has a great spooky dark elf vibe but is a dark dank maze. I’m willing to give them a total pass, however, since they really were from the first few years of the genre, plus both got makeovers eventually.

Newer MMOs have no such excuse. So what’s the worst city in an MMORPG – and what puts it on such a list for you?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
