The Daily Grind: Are ‘survival MMOs’ just MMOs with busywork attached?

I as much as any other fan of this industry was pleased to hear that Funcom seemingly promoted Dune Awakening to full MMO status. However, I’ll admit that my enthusiasm for the game somewhat deflated when I was reminded that, yes, it’s going to include “survival” elements.

Maybe it’s just me, but the luster of survival titles faded a while back. Any time I go into a game with this label attached, I know I’m in for a lot of foraging, tree-chopping, and routine repairs of rapidly degrading outfits. Honestly, it feels like extra chores just to keep me from doing the fun adventuring content I want to do.

What do you think? Are survival MMOs like New World and Dune Awakening just MMOs with busywork slapped onto them? Does that kind of gameplay appeal to or repel you?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
