The Daily Grind: Do you try to hide who you are in MMOs?

Stay with me here for a sec; I swear today’s Daily Grind is about MMOs! My husband linked me an article about hummingbirds: Apparently, about 20% of female white-necked jacobins hummingbirds have a neat trick where they keep the plumage of males and effectively zip around disguised as dude hummingbirds, thereby reducing the likelihood that they’ll be pestered by rivals as well as potential mates while doing their hummingbird thing.

I immediately thought of female gamers who roll male toons specifically to avoid being annoyed by that certain subset of gamers who hassle women. Obviously this is less an evolutionary quirk and more a choice for humans in MMOs, but dang. Of course, this isn’t just a ladygamer thing; I’m betting kind of a lot of people pick characters to blend in and hide out for all kinds of reasons, right?

See, I told you this was about games! Do you try to hide who you are in MMOs? What’s your motivation?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
