The Daily Grind: Has an MMO ad ever worked on you?

Here we go once more.

I’m not sure how to feel about the fact that Final Fantasy XIV has done a fair number of live-action ads that are all some degree of cringe. It does not bother me; I think it’s kind of charming, and it has a warm sense of being weird and awkward in a way that suits the game well enough. Some people feel it is unbearably cringe, and they do not like it. But that just makes me wonder how successful any ads for MMOs are at convincing people to play the game.

There has, to my memory, never been an MMO that advertised itself at me that got me playing because of those advertisements. I was interested in most of these games before the actual ads flooded any space, and while I can’t say that any of the ads would have gotten me interested, I also wasn’t the target audience in the first place, right? I had already made my play decision. So I’m curious. Has an MMO ad ever worked on you? Has an ad made you think, “Ooh, I want to try that MMO out?” Or have your decisions been based on other elements that have no relation to advertisements?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
