The Daily Grind: How bloody do you want your MMOs?

Weepy weep weep.

There’s a lot of talk about violence in video games, but examples cited are often not really about violence but about the results of that violence. Today’s question is about exactly that. In many MMOs you are cutting a path of destruction through your foes using weapons that inflict quite a bit of damage. The question, then, is how much you want to see the results of that weaponry when you’re playing.

Most MMOs are largely bloodless, despite the violence. Sure, you’re hacking at the boss with a gigantic sword, but that just inflicts damage. It’s the suggestion of violence more than actual violence. Other games do turn up the blood a fair bit, some of them to rather silly degrees. But there are players who are a bit squeamish, and not everyone likes to see comical sprays of blood all over the place when they so much as throw a tennis ball. So how bloody do you want your MMOs? Do you prefer the broadly sanitized look, or are you happiest with gallons of red liquid?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
