A while back in Massively Overthinking, MOP’s Andy referred to a specific game as “fun but not especially memorable,” and I had a record-scratch stop-the-presses moment of thought. That phrase sums up so many MMOs for me. They’re not bad MMOs. They’re not particularly objectionable. They fill the hours with pleasant activity, and then they’re done. They don’t grip me, stick in my head, make me want to hurry up with work so I can get back into them. I kind of just have warm feelings for them – and no particular desire to play them again. And having that desire is definitely something I want!
I don’t want to use the word generic because I think it’s more than that. Which MMOs would you say are fun – but not memorable?
Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
