MMO sandbox BitCraft emphasizes player ownership and terraforming while avoiding a griefing ‘hellscape’

Clockwork Labs’ Gamer Director Carter “Minch” Minshull and CTO Alessandro Asoni sat for a lengthy podcast-esque video this week focused on upcoming sandbox BitCraft – which, you’ll note right away, is now carrying the Age of Automata” tagline. If you haven’t been following the game at all – and given how little traction it’s gotten in development so far, we’d say that’s probably a lot of people reading right now – then this is probably not the super basic introduction to the game you need (nor does it include any game footage, though past videos have done so).

Instead, the pair of devs focus on the basics of sandbox design itself, both their own sandbox design and what players can do within it, even in these early stages of alpha. Notably, the devs discuss giving players terraform abilities – “the power to shape the world” – but with explicit “guardrails in place so that this doesn’t turn into a complete hellscape disaster of players just griefing the terrain everywhere they go.” Ah, so Minch is familiar with MMORPG players!

It’s a fun look inside an MMORPG that is taking sandbox play seriously. The video is down below.
