The Daily Grind: How long can you do the same thing in an MMORPG?

I have, it must be said, a high tolerance for grinding and repetition. I can handle a very long stretch of doing the exact same thing, over and over, with little to no variation. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I can subsist on the exact same weekly routine with weekly caps and activities in an MMORPG without fail for a solid… three months. And then I’m getting bored.

This is not a problem of the games in question. One of the things I’ve said repeatedly is that it is faster to consume content than make content, and some of that is by design. (Do you want a raid that takes six months of repeated attempts to clear once? Do you?!) We keep doing the same thing over and over and eventually we are going to get tired of it, full stop. There is no technology to prevent this. Eventually the same thing gets repetitive and you get bored.

So how long can you do the same thing over and over in an MMORPG? Regardless of what awaits on the other end, how long before you need to change your routine, get new content, or just plain stop?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
